Thread Details

Ever since the last update (nov2010?) my xbox is kinda worthless. Every time i'm trying to watch a movie on netflix my xbox restarts completely. At first i thought it was netflix but then i tried streaming a movie from my PC using windows media center and the same problem occurs.

I can be watching a movie and sometimes it will restart 3-4 times, after a while the xbox warms up or something and it won't restart anymore.

Before the update this never occurred.

I've already tried this but it seems to only restore the settings, I want to reinstall the entire firmware/update if possible
1

Turn on your Xbox 360. If you have a game inserted and it starts automatically, press the "Xbox" button and then "Y" to go to the Dashboard.
2

Go to the "My Xbox" tab.
3

Scroll to the end and select "System Settings".
4

Scroll to the bottom and select "Initial Setup".
5

Confirm that you wish to run the Initial Setup utility. Once the utility completes, your Xbox will be restarted and you will be brought back to your Dashboard. You may need to perform a firmware update to play games or connect to Xbox Live.

@ssjmichael

can i stream my windows media center stuff to a ps3? I really don't feel like spending $300 on a playstation. I hardly play games anymore.

I rather pay $100 and buy either an apple tv or roku to stream stuff

The directions in your post merely restore default settings, it will have zero effect whatsoever on the dashboard version or anything of the sort.

if you only need it for streaming... why are you playing 30-60 a year for xbl? it makes much more sense not to use an xbox. you could sell the idiot box and buy a streaming device and pocket 50 bucks

Xbox360 + PlayOn = GREAT streaming experience. I would buy a standalone streaming device if it did Hulu and it didn't cost $300. No need for xbl with Playon, either. And you can still use Netflix.

Actually this is how you do it. right from Microsoft. This can always come in handy.

I kept a copy of the last 2 older firmwares on my PC just in case I ever want to or need to reflash to an older Dashboard Microsoft has taken down the previous firmwares. Maybe when the 360 is obsolete and I'd risk a softmod to boot backups but right no I am waiting for Gears of War 3 and Batman Arkham City and the new Metal Gear Solid so not planning on doing anything risky to it.

That only allows you to update, I thought, not replace with the same or a lower version.
