craigslist won't list my item

RUsum1 9,544 1,696 January 5, 2011 at 05:43 PM
i've been trying to list a color laser printer on craigslist and it never appears on the list. fifteen minutes after making the post for the printer, i made another post for a usb adapter which is already on the list yet my printer won't show.

i tried to send craigslist an email but i don't think they have any actual workers because all i get in response is the same faq that i can view on the website. it's getting quite annoying. is there any reason why this particular product won't list? does craigslist ban samsung printers or something?

here is a direct link to my post
http://charleston.craigslist.org/...88744.html
but that does no good if people can't see it on the list.

Are you sure you put contact info into the ad? Perhaps something was missed in the steps to build and submit the listing? Didn't get the security code correct when you input it to submit? Typed your username or email address incorrectly?

How about you just edit your usb adapter post and enter the printer info and then create a new usb adapter post.

I'd just rebuild the ad and submit it again. Could be one of those things where we all get air-headed sometimes. You might have built it all up, got it ready and just closed it instead of submitting it.

It's possible your item was 'ghosted' or 'ghost listed'. craigslist uses algorithms to try and catch those people they feel might be abusing their ad service. Some combination of words, capitals even excessive commas could trigger an ad getting ghosted. By ghosted it means they supposedly publish it, it shows as being live in your account, but it doesn't show up in searches and essentially hidden and cut-off from the public seeing it.

My best advice would be to delete the ads, don't try to immediately resubmit them though because if something like 80% of the new info matches your old ad it is ghosted. You have to wait 48 hours before resubmitting them. Remove any trigger words like 'New', 'In Box' and those types of things. Also, don't use all-cap's in the title. There are a number of other things, you may want to log onto the craigslist forums, usually you will get a reply to questions there within 15 minutes, many times in a couple of minutes.

we're not allowed to use these words even if they accurately describe what i'm trying to sell? how can these words be used to abuse craigslist? if this is the case, it makes no sense.

does craigslist have any actual workers to contact or is it just an unmonitored site at this point?

From the FAQ:
http://www.craigslist.org/about/h...#postOften
Quote :
How often can I post?
You may post to one category and in one city, no more often than about every 48 hours.

If you are submitting a post that is similar to another currently active post of yours on the site, you will get a blocked message. Removing the active post will allow you to post the new ad, unless the active post is less than 48 hours old.

If you've lost the email that allows you to manage/remove your post, you can have it resent here: http://www.craigslist.org/cgi-bin/resend.
Looks like you have to sit in the corner in time-out for 2 days Smilie

You could try:
1) delete your posting
2) clear cookies
3) pull the plug on your modem and get a new ip address
4) get a new gmail address and forward to main email acct
5) register new account with CL
6) post ad

If that doesn't work, then you gotta wait 2 days laugh out loud

Yeah, your ad is being ghosted. No, there are no workers at Craigslist to talk to - the ad posting process is automated, and if the server OR the community thinks you've done something wrong, it will not post or it will get removed. The only help you can get is to post to the user community [craigslist.org]. If you post there, they may be able to give you a better idea of why you're getting ghosted.

Once your account is flagged & you start getting ghosted, your best bet is to come in from a completely different place - different email address, different computer & different IP address. CL doesn't really share what they track when they flag 'spammers', but it could be any one or a combination of the above that's on their blacklist.

craigslist tweaked their stupid algorithms not too long ago, suddenly a lot of people started getting ghosted. Even those that had been positing the same type of ads previously with no problems got ghosted.

I will say, it's not like your account is flagged or something. I listed two things and had one get ghosted, probably by triggering their stupid algorithms by using 'new in unopened box' on the title and the ad body. I listed another ad after that using the same account and had no problems.

Like G37 said above, you should probably delete the ad, wait 48 hours time-out, rewrite the ad and remove the New Box type descriptions and resubmit it. If it is within 48 hours it will trigger the repeat-submission thing.

Sucks but CL still is so well used by those looking to buy things, we really don't have a recourse but to play by their lame/stupid rules to post things on their site...

good luck!

I wonder if your ad, while fine on it's own, was similar enough to and posted right after someone who WAS spamming. Through no fault of your own, it caught you in the ghosting wake.

Something similar happened to me last week when I posted a couple used xbox 360 games that I didn't want anymore.

I couldn't see or find my ad listing anywhere, but people were able to see it and contact me about buying the games.

well that is stupid. how is it spamming to say you have a brand new item for sale if it's actually brand new? and it's ridiculous to run a website that has no workers to deal with glitches. is there another site similar to craigslist that i could use besides ebay? i don't want to have to ship a big printer which would take $30+ of my profits.

does craigslist have an actual list of banned words?

im sure they do, but if they published it, then all the bots/etc. would be able to abide by those rules as well

Can you post the title and text? Perhaps one of the helpers here can see an issue with what you posted?

Hmm. Not sure that would be allowed due to self promotion rules. Maybe a bad idea.

Perhaps give us the title and what category you posted in.
