Time to renew cell phone contract.....

My wife and I currently have Verizon Wireless and it's nearing the end of our 2-yr contract. We've never had a data plan. But, considering how good the Sprint deals are right now, we're thinking about signing with Sprint and going with a data plan.

Anyone have any insights on Sprint service? I've been hearing mixed things about them. Also, any recommendations on a basic smartphone? We don't want to spend too much. I've been looking at the LG Optimus S.

and Verizon got rid of the New every Two.

I have Sprint, Love it. Had hero, just bought HTC Evo.


Optimus is great phone for price. More durable. Got great reviews and supposed to be very quick.

We currently have a shared plan with Verizon. According to the Amazon website, it may be difficult keeping our current phone number. Does anyone know if that's true?

I would ask people who live in your area how their service is. Sprint is definitely cheaper but coverage is spotty in certain places. If it's good in your area i would definitely switch and save $. For me, I don't have much of a choice as Verizon is the only provider that has good coverage up and down the East Coast (I travel often).

If you want to stay with verizon pretty much the best you can do is this plan. I'm not sure about other 3rd parties but I was able to take advantage of it without penalty with a smartphone I purchased from Amazon (much cheaper than Verizon's online prices, even with my NE2 bonus).

i realize you can roam on verizon for free but my understanding is that you can only use 50% of your minutes while roaming and that sprint users don't get access to verizon's 3G network....that's not a problem if you're only roaming occasionally but based on my experience with friends who have sprint that is a limitation i would come up against a lot.

Like saint said, LG optimus is a good android phone. Best bang for the buck. Phone costs $50 after mail-in-rebate.

I helped my friend buy optimus this past weekend and also set up the phone for him.

Very slick phone. Not too large like iPhone/EVO. If cameras and video chats are your in thing then optimus is not for you. For basic apps like NFL scores, flight timings, yelp, maps etc this phone is great.
Also, no 4G on this phone.

Sprint will use Verizon's network at what's called a 1x. You wont use there 3g, but you dont need that to make phone calls. My phone rarely goes into Roam "analog".

i was talking about for data. 1x is pretty much unusable...

For those with data plans, how much usage do you use up each month on average? With Verizon, the $15 data plan includes 150 MB. I wonder if most ppl reach that max. usage each month if they don't watch Netflix or movies on their phones.

Unlimited. Sprint doesn't nickel and dime me like that ( :ignores 4g fee: ). And with the free Sprint TV, apps market, full Flash video support, etc, I'm sure I go far beyond 150MB / month.

With Sprint TV, can you watch sporting events like the NFL and NBA?

Is there a similar feature with Verizon plans where you can watch TV?
