The buffet trick is paying for a cheaper meal by showing up right before the changeover between meals so you get better items. This works best during the weekday since the savings is pretty substantial.

I'll use the Buffet at The Wynn, since I can confirm it works there and is my favorite Las Vegas Buffet.

Here are the prices as of today:

Breakfast
Monday - Friday $19
8AM - 10:30AM

Brunch
Saturday - Sunday $30
8AM - 3:30PM

Lunch
Monday - Friday $23
11AM - 3:30PM

Dinner
Sunday - Thursday $35
Friday - Saturday $39
3:30PM - 10PM

For example, if you eat dinner on Fridays at the Wynn it would be $39. But if you show up around 3PM and sit around for a little bit, you pretty much get the full dinner experience for only $23, a savings of $16 per person. You may be eating a little earlier, but if you stuff yourself full this will be your dinner.

I hear this also works at the Bellagio and Studio B Buffet (The M Resort), but haven't confirmed this myself.

Enjoy the crab legs!

Ah, I see. So for the Wynn buffet, if I get to the cash register at around 2:45pm, I would be able to dine on lunch food for 45 minutes, and then enjoy dinner food soon after. The key is that they won't kick people out.

Thanks again!
Tofu Vic
Yes, that is correct! They definitely do not kick people out. I am a cheapass in Vegas and have done this trick many times. I don't know when you're going or where you're staying or how much you're looking to pay but there's a promo for the Wynn until December 20th. Use promo code WLVAU4 at the Wynn for reduced rates at the Wynn AND two free buffets per day/one $25 beverage credit per stay. I really want to take advantage of this deal because I've never stayed at the Wynn. Sadly, I just cannot make it. I have copied and pasted the details below:

Two (2) night minimum reservation. Dates subject to change and blackout dates include, but are not limited to November 21-25, 2012. Offers good for stays through December 20, 2012. A daily resort fee of $25 plus tax will be added to your room account, which entitles you to receive certain complimentary select hotel amenities. The total shown for your online reservation does not include this daily fee. Reservations are limited to Wynn Las Vegas Deluxe Resort Rooms and Encore Resort Suite Kings, are subject to availability and may only be booked up to 14 consecutive nights per trip.

All offers (excluding WLVAU7 and WLVAU8) include access to two (2) meals per day at The Buffet during stay dates in November and December 2012. Stay dates prior to November 1, 2012 not eligible for Buffet meals. Reservations booked under WLVAU3 and WLVAU4 are eligible for one-time $25 Beverage Credit per stay usable at any restaurant or bar at Wynn Las Vegas and Encore. Beverage credit not usable at nightclubs or The Buffet. Reservations under WLVAU3 and WLVAU4 must contain at least one (1) night in November or December to be eligible for Beverage Credit. All menu items are subject to availability and may be substituted at the discretion of Wynn Las Vegas at any time. Tax included. Gratuities not included. Any additional beverages or food items consumed beyond offer allowance will be charged and taxed accordingly.

Reservations under WLVAU2, WLVAU4,WLVAU6 and WLVAU8 must prepay room and room tax for entire stay to be eligible for discounted room rate pricing. Prepaid reservations are non-refundable.

Consecutive reservations may not be booked for this promotion. This offer may not be combined with any other offer and has no cash value. Offer is not valid for any group bookings, conventions or existing reservations and is non-commissionable. A valid credit card authorized to cover room and tax plus $200 a night for incidentals must be presented upon check-in. Wynn Las Vegas™ reserves the right to cancel, suspend, or modify this offer at its sole discretion. This offer is subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Offer is not available to employees of Wynn Resorts™, or its affiliates. Problem Gamblers HelpLine 800-522-4700. Know your limits.™

My friends and I are planning to go during MLK weekend in mid-January, 2013. The Wynn would be nice, but my friends aren't planning to spend too much time in the hotel anyway, so we're looking for a cheap place. I think we may settle on two nights in one room at Imperial Palace for $159.03, which includes all taxes and fees. I'm hoping to find a better place or a less expensive deal, but aren't having a lot of luck.

SD staff members get trolled in real life? I thought you all just led celebrity-style lives, but with the advantage of not getting bothered by lesser beings - I mean, SD members/your fans.

Oh, I see! lol. I honestly thought you meant you're nervous about getting trolled in real life. My initial not-very-realistic thought is of an SD member running up to the SD table, pointing at you, then announcing loudly that you all are cheapskates who paid virtually nothing for the buffet. =P

Enjoy your group date on an undisclosed day!

Going to vegas later this month. Went in 2010 and somehow managed to not eat at a single buffet. Will definitely try to time it right this time around!

The buffet at the Caesar's is deceptively one of the worst buffets out there. It's selection is very limited and with a hotel of that calibre, you'd expect something on the lines of Bellagio. However, it's closer to Flamingo than anything else. ActuallY i think i prefer the Flamingo one instead. Go to PH, Rio, or Paris, much better there.
Actually it used to be one of the worst, they just redid the entire buffet, I haven't tried it yet but I've read it is much, much better.

Keep looking. You should be able to do better than this. I don't see ridiculous rates showing up for this weekend, so I'd at least watch for a sale over the next 30 days or a good promo rate. As long as you book something 60 days out, you shouldn't see rates jump up. Even then, I'd book something that's fully refundable if possible in case a great deal pops up in late Nov./early Dec.

If you don't care about a specific hotel, I'd also consider Priceline as an option.
