Old 60GB PS3 freezing more frequently, sign of bad things to come?

Thread Details

I've noticed my old 60GB fat PS3 has been freezing more. Just last week I think it completely locked up twice while I was playing Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare. I had to power it off and on by the switch in back since it wouldn't respond to the controller. I remember occasional freezes the past few months playing COD Black ops.

So I'm wondering if maybe the drive is dirty and needs a cleaning or is this a sign of bad things to come. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem with their older PS3s. A new slim PS3 would be nice, but I don't have the cash to buy a new one anytime soon.

What about other games?

My PS3 has hardlocked during RDR and BlOps but seems fine on others. My gut instinct is your PS3 is fine and its just the games...

Those are really the only two games I have been playing the past 4 or 5 months.

I've had the same problem with BLOPS and I have the orginal 60G system. It sometimes drops the network connection, too. Yet when I go back to playing WARHAWK (still one of my favs), no problems. Makes me think it's the game

An old 60GB PS3 I am guessing the kind that has hardware BC. I hope you have your reciept and if anything ask for a courtesy reduction in repair costs. Depends on what rep you get but it shoudl be $75 buck not bad and you get another year coverage gurantee on the repair. To my knowledge they do not repair these older 60GB models you just get a refurbished or in some cases a Factory new PS3 Slim in OEM packaging. So its the same a new PS3 you buy at Best Buy but in a plain box.

all the best.

kinda OT but what category would 80gb PS3 models fall under? Are they also part of original launch consoles? Mine doesnt have backwards compatability.

I had enough problems withmy x360's. With the recent ps3 failure threads I'm slightly concerned.

Only the 20 and 60gb are launch models. There are two 80gb models I believe, one with partial ps2 bc, and one with none.

Blops hard freezes on me all the time. Broken ass game but still less broken than MW2 trash.

I only have gotten freezes on FFXIII and Infamous. I would do a backup as suggested, but if it is isolated to those games, and others have reported the same issue, I would bet it is the games.

Your other issue might be a failing blu-ray laser. I dont think freezing like that is indicative of the YLOD. Usually there are little to no signs of YLOD. One day, BAM you have it.

BLOPS would occasionally lock up my fat 80gb. Get a DVD cleaning disk and blow out the exhaust ports with some compressed air, and make sure it's not overheating. Mine has been fine since.

Stuff like this is precisely why I offloaded my 60gb for a Slim, before it had the chance to happen.
