when he says "software sucks", he means that this phone hasn't received an official 2.2 update. samsung and all of the other galaxy s carriers have been promising an official 2.2 update "tomorrow" or "next week" or "by the end of the month" since these phones were released. the only one to officially update was the tmobile vibrant, and that was only a couple weeks ago. there were some leaks that came out in sept and october. i have a captivate and am currently running a custom rom called cognition 3.04.........it is based on a 2.2 leak.
pretty much, if you want official software updates, stay away from any samsung phones. if i were in the market for a phone, i'd avoid this one and wait to see what deals come out in the next few months. the motorola atrix is an awesome looking phone that docks into a netbook. there is also a new lg phone which is looking pretty nice. i wouldn't go for the newer samsung 4g phone, because it will likely be stuck on the current version of android for a while.
also loading your own custom 2.2 and even 2.3 boosts battery life by 200-300% anyway so why not! i have a rooted epic and a non rooted epic and the rooted one lasts almost 3x longer. it's also the fastest phone you can buy until april.
$0 is awesome for this phone. I paid full price the week it came out and don't regret it. The two biggest issues I have with it are Samsung's/AT&T's excessive delay in updating to 2.2 and the periodic failure of the built in e-mail client.
The phone itself is awesome, I bought it when RadioShack had a deal for it with ATT in December.
Great phone, hardware is awesome. Power/sleep is directly across from the volume though, so when you turn the screen off its easy to accidentally turn your phone up or put it on silent before turning the screen off. MicroUSB port is on top of the phone. Takes a bit of getting used to. The vibrator is pretty weak, esp compared to my old phone so its hard for me to notice texts. Also, it does not have any light/led. The only big issue it has is, as mentioned above, ATT hasn't released the 2.2 update for it, which means either sitting on 2.1, or having to go through the bother of updating it myself.
Definitely a good phone to get, I'd recommend it, especially if you are capable of updating to 2.2 on your own.
