Some information to make any buyers feel better about their purchase, and perhaps justify to the wife Wink The current model is the W9, and it is almost the same model, with a few tweaks - bigger hard drive, Windows 7, same proc w/ faster clockspeed, but most notably longer battery life. The W9 came out just under a year ago.

W9 Overview, Google Translate [google.com]

W9 Specs, Google Translate [google.com]

Translated W9 listing on Amazon JP [co.jp] That price is about $2300.

Translated W8 listing on Amazon JP, downgrade model [co.jp] That price is about $1400.

Global Mobile Broadband Internet –Gobi Technology (EV-DO Rev. A., HSPA) listed above as included is NOT included. It is listed as an option in the ordering process ($250) and has been reported as an option in emails from the vendor.

Please note that this model does NOT have Windows 7 x64 drivers. The Windows 7 x86 driver pack can be found Here [tpgweb2.net].

I have tried many wireless adapters such as the above. It makes no differance. What matters is internal wireless and if it is not intel then forget it.

Does anyone know where to get replacement keys for this key board? The left CTRL key poped off and was lost.

Thanks

Just last night I replaced a key on my son's Sony laptop that I got from replacementlaptopkeys.com. There are a few other sites out there that will send you a single key for a couple of bucks, rather than having to get a whole new keyboard for $100-plus. You'd have to see if they have Toughbook keys, but I'll say that their customer service was excellent, because I had to call them to confirm they had the exact key I was looking for since the online "key picker" was not conclusive (the key I needed was a combo PgDn and down arrow, their drop-down list had those listed as two separate keys). The key I got was an exact match and perfect fit. Good luck.

this sucks but there is only one ctrl key - meaning there is no right one!
this might help you meanwhile, before you get your key replacement. it is possible to swap Fn and CTRL keys - during the boot up press F2 and it is somewhere in the menus

Hello all.
I just wanted to let you know that I did a fresh install of Windows 8 on the CF-W8. The installation went well but the wheel pad did not work (and I got addicted to it). Also, no sound with the speakers on, but plugging a headset would get me sound (sounds familiar if you had Windows 7 installed on it).

I downloaded the drivers made normally for the CF-SX2. There is in particular a Windows 8 update driver file you can get. (http://panasonic.com/business/tou...nloads.asp)

Use the following entries: Search for all drivers, model number Toughbook SC-SX2, Model version CF-SX2J (mk1), OS WIndows 8 upgrade, Language English

Two records will be found, Use the second one from the top list and click download.

Get the Hotkeysettings utilities.
Get the touchpad driver
Get the Wheel pad utility.
You should normally already have the Panasonic Misc driver (I took the one from the Windows 7, for the CF-SX2)

Decompress the files that are automatically placed in the C:/util2 folder

Install in this order.
1- the Panasonic Misc driver
2- The touchpad driver
3- Weel pad utility.
4- Hotkey appendix utility REBOOT, Make sure your BIOS is set to default before your restart
5- Hotkey settings utilities., REBOOT

When the PC reboots, your speaker will be off. Do Ctr+F4. Test the volume using the Ctrl+F6 (up) or F5 (down).

Everything should work. No exclamation mark for any drivers in the Device manager panel.

Windows 8 is really fast compared to Windows 7. I also have the screen light intensity ctrl+ F1 or F2 work too. So far all is well.

Try it.

Thanks Hydro - one question before I go for it...are you saying the Misc driver we used to install Win 7 64-bit can be re-used for Windows 8?

I ask because in your post you say you used the Misc driver for Win 7 for the CF-SX2 - but when I search for that driver on the Panasonic site, it comes up with "0 records found". I used the same selections you listed in your post, with the exception of choosing Win 7 64 bit SP1 as the OS rather than Win 8.

Thanks,
stlbluesfan

It is easy. Somewhere in this thread, there is a link to someone who upgraded his hard drive and memory.

Here it is.

1- Updating the RAM and the hard drive is easy. I bought a laptop for my son who clearly does not need 500GB of RAM. I used this hard drive for my Cf-W8 and it works great. I kept the old hard drive and mounted it when I shipped it to Panasonic to have my screen replaced because of dead spots (great warranty and customer service by the way).
To clone the old drive use Paragon http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/
You can also use Paragon partition http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-express/ to partition your HDD.

Now, I was hoping there would be a second HDD port to use two hard drives, one SSD and one HDD (there is enough room for both if you stack them), but I could not see a second port. One way around would be to cannibalize one USB port and to run a usb cable from it to the non SSD drive. I might wait until the three year warranty is out.

I also have in project to add a webcam to it since there is enough room to run a usb cable and web cam in the padded lid. Again, I will wait until the CF-W8 is out of warranty.

2-Misc driver, I used the Windows 7 64 driver for the CF-SX2.
PanasonicMiscDriver_v1.3.1100.100_SX2J_W764_ss11366.exe

It really boosts up performances with Windows 8. It takes time to get used to, but I really like it now. Boot up is 2-3 times faster and programs seem to run faster too.
You guys should really try it (along with Ubuntu that works great on this machine too. I run it through a 32gb USB key).

Best to all,
Hydro

PS. I have attached a picture that shows that all hardware is correctly installed (no exclamation marks). Windows 8 64 runs better on this machine than Windows 7 64.

That is because there is a commercial that pops up. Click on the box in the top right corner of the screen and you should be able to see the directions that lie just behind it.
Best.

How can you brick your laptop by upgrading your ram?

Anyone have any idea on how to replace the Intel wireless lan card? Mine's acting up and it won't connect to the wifi for more than a minute. I have tried uninstalling the drivers and everything else I can think of but I can't fix it. I am running Win 7 x64 ultimate
