Optiplex 380 Boot issue

LiquidRetro 12,661 4,824 February 21, 2011 at 09:32 AM
I have an optiplex 380 that is having boot issues. The machine BSOD and then reported the hard drive as not being found so it would not boot. I went into the bios, turned on smart (Dell evidently ships this as off) rebooted had the same issue and then ran dell diagnostics.

Diagnostics found the following.
Error Code: 0151
MSG: Error Code 2000-0151
Hard Drive 1 - Incorrect Status: 3E No Additional Sense info

The machine is under warranty and dell is sending a new drive. I am hoping I can take an image of this drive to restore to the new hardware tomorrow. Any idea what this 3E no additional Sense info means, or how to reset it so I can run the image? I have spinrite running now so it seems the bios can see the drive. I am hoping to run Acronis in boot cd format to grab the image. Any other ideas?

Are you sure it's a HD issue? The error code is showing that it's an optical drive issue. Try disconnecting the optical drive.

Optical drives return error codes (or Sense codes like they're called in the industry) when something is the matter or just to inform the host (PC, application) of a certain situation.

Ya, I know, its strange. Dell is replacing the HD and it wont boot. All the boot CD's I use talk about the impending HD failure. I unplugged the optical drive and it throws the same error. My guess is its just not a descriptive code.

What I find absurd is that dell turns off SMART by default.
