should I pay for tax prep this year?
I got laid off last year, and ended up doing contracts and other positions until I finally found a job where I think I can settle into on a long term basis.
My income (luckily) as a result was a good portion higher last year, and because of the constant switching around and wonderings of if I'll make it/find something I really like, coupled with quite a few personal events that ended up costing a bit, I ended up not banking much at all into 401k.. . .
So I've just put into most of my stuff into TurboTax, and I already owe 1600. .. . that's with all my W2s in there.
I ended up forming a DBA last year (bad advice from a recruiter), and bought a $600 laptop to use solely for contract work, but other than that I've never itemized (and didn't last year either).
A friend said that a tax preparer can maybe lessen the blow. But I'm thinking how much can we possibly lessen, if I don't really have any bills that I can provide? A good chunk of change went to our dog who was diagnosed with cancer, but am I SOL? Should I pay for a tax preparer? Or just keep what Turbo Tax says?
Help?
