Firefly is set to air starting this Sunday on the Science Channel in HD. If everyone watches it on the Science Channel, that might be incentive for the powers that be to resurrect the show. Nathan Fillion has already said he would do more episodes.
Firefly: The Complete Series’ makes its long-awaited debut on Blu-ray with a somewhat mediocre 1080p/AVC-encoded transfer that fails to rejuvenate the series’ problematic source. Close-ups and practical shots look quite impressive (more on that in a bit), but special effects sequences are soft (downright blurry at times), long distance pans are muddled, and texture clarity is a tad inconsistent...
...Honestly, I have a hard time faulting the production team for saving cash and making the series look as good as they could at a time when HDTV was a pipe dream, but it doesn’t change the fact that the BD edition of ‘Firefly’ is uneven and, at times, painfully underwhelming.
Even so, fans shouldn’t let that bit of disheartening news discourage their enthusiasm too much. ‘Firefly’s transfer is as technically polished as I expected it to be (the only way it could be drastically improved is if Fox went back to the drawing board and crafted new special effects sequences from scratch) and, for the most part, looks much better than it did on standard DVD.
In other words, it's better than Firefly on DVD but not as nice as some other Blu-ray transfers (e.g. Serenity.)
Quote from toolio20 :
Achievements are not for the meek, it is better to forfeit inheritance of the earth so that the mighty may look upon my gamerscore, and despair. Achievements are for men who dream; men who dare; men who achieve! Men who carve out entire galaxies with nothing more than nimble cheetos-dusted fingers and their wits, and in our leisurely twilight days we shall sit by softly flickering fires with our descendants recounting the tales of these unimaginable glories.
There is a notable improvement in video quality between the DVD and Blu-Ray, BUT not in the special effects screens, since they were rendered in SD. But the live action scenes without digital SE work look much better. Note, live action scenes with active SE (when Serenity rises above Mal, Zoe, and Jayne after their bar fight) will be upscaled SD. But 98% of the time - nice improvement.
Castle is pretty good, they had a great reference last week, his mother was going to the Serenity at the Oasis spa retreat, and she wondered why he had never heard of the Serenity. Nice, long, silent head turn toward the camera, they do this QUITE a bit on Castle. Another favorite is when he puts on the blue gloves, you can practically here him mumble two by two, hands of blue. And of course, when he dressed up in his Captain Reynolds uni on the Halloween episode...
Watch Firefly, then Serenity. If you are wondering about Firefly early, you MUST at least watch through Out Of Gas. If you finish that episode and still don't like Firefly, it just ain't for you...
