the current gen XPS 15 is a piece of garbage. mine was broken right out of the box. it's taken Dell 5+ weeks to send me a replacement. they're excuse was that they just came out with the latest gen i-processors from intel, the sandy bridge etc.
so they are sending me an upgrade to an i7 sandy bridge (2nd gen) from what i had originally...an i5 first gen. the build quality on the XPS 15 is inferior to most brands now. the screen is horrible, however the specs (processor, graphics card, memory, HD capacity, etc) are insane for the $$$. no wonder though...the actual physical build quality and screen quality is garbage. good thing i have a warranty on it...i have a feeling that i'll be using it quite frequently as the plastics on this already broken one are creaking (received it January 26) Last edited by Medic311; 03-04-2011 at 10:09 PM.. |

Ugh, I expect tax to be present for us in California. That and the GT 420M kills this for me, not fond of overclocking a laptop. Plus it's Dell...I'd prefer to stay away from Dell.
Good features for $650 though. --Edit-- Read a bunch of reviews and it seems the build quality is good, but the cooling is mediocre with temps of 3DMark06 having the temps hit around 75-80C. Most review sites gave it a 4 to 4.5 out of 5. Screenshot of HWmonitor: http://images.anandtech.com/doci/...t-wear.png Really good speakers and parts though. If you overclock the GT 420, you can possibly get to the speeds of a GT 435. The plethora of up to date ports are great for most user and future proofs it, making this a much better deal. Downside is that it's unusually bulkier and a tad bit heavier than similar laptops. The touch pad tends to get warmer than the palm rest on either side of it when gaming. Touchpad itself is supposed to be pretty good in terms of texture. The downgrade in warranty means you lose 24/7 tech support and in home repairs. Not a big deal at all for tech savvy folks. For those that aren't, Google is your friend. Seriously, it is. The downgraded warranty still covers the hardware/DOAs and part failures as far as I can tell, or at least should. Jump on this if you want: Good speakers, backlit keyboard, fast processor, medium quality graphics for gaming, decent/a bit above average build quality. Stay away if you dislike: Average to mediocre cooling, unusual bulkiness, weight of 6 to 6.5lbs, and that it is a Dell. I'm personally still debating on whether to get one or not. Everything looks good except for the cooling and Dell brand name. Would of definitely got this if it was $50-100 cheaper on top of coupon and warranty downgrade.
