Well B&D might want me to keep buying a new set every 36 months, but that does not mean that when you reach 36 months suddenly everything breaks down. We have a similar 12V B&D drill that is 6 years old, and it keeps working nicely, including the batteries. The batteries do not have the same charge capacity but you can still work with them for hours.

Honestly, this is a simple but quality drill for $22. It is for the amateur DIYers, who do a house fixing job once in a while. If you expect this drill be a pro grade workhorse, your expectations might be a little off.

On the note of being a DIYer with a broken charger, you might as well fix your old charger. It is a simple DC supply with a piece that fits over the batteries. If the supply part is broken, just buy a similar rating supply from Jameco or somewhere and connect the two wires to the battery connector piece. It is so straighforward that it should take 1 min to fix.

TLDR; this a simple to use and nice drill for $20. Don't expect to build a whole house with it. If your only problem is that the battery charger is broken after 3-5 years, and the drill is still fine, that is a good thing as you can simply fix the charger.
