Deal Details

I just noticed that USPS now has a "Regional Rate" for shipping short distance priority mail. See http://www.usps.com/shipping/regionalratebox.htm.

You need to use the special regional rate box to use this rate, which can be ordered free online:

order Priority Mail Regional Rate Boxes [usps.com]

This is what ebay says about this:

Save big on short-distance shipping

Starting in March, when you ship short-distances, you can use the new USPS Priority Mail(R) Regional RateTM boxes - available online only - for shipments of up to 15 lbs and shipments of up to 20 lbs. Choose this new option when your buyer is close to home.

For example, if you ship a 10 lb package from San Jose to Sacramento, look at the savings:

Priority Mail(R) costs $9.80
Priority Mail(R) Medium Flat Rate Box costs $10.50
Priority Mail(R) Regional Rate Box A costs only $4.97

Look for the USPS Regional Rate box option when you print labels on eBay. Remember - you've got to use the box to get these fantastic rates!&q

Are they purposely trying to make things more complicated than they need to be? Why not just adjust their stupid Priority Mail costs accordingly and screw all these special boxes!

Very useful! I often ship textbooks less than 50 miles and this would save me some money. Thanks OP. TU & rep'd Smilie

If more and better options for cheaper prices is freaking you out, then I'm surprised you even figured out how to type your useless comment.

i send a TON of packages with my startup - these new regional boxes are great

the A box basically sits between the small flat rate and the medium flat rate, i have the B box but haven't used it yet - seems to sit btw medium and large flat rate box.

and they can be used anywhere - the closer the cheaper

just remember these boxes can ONLY be used when printing the postage at home/office - you can't use this at the post office

i am in austin, texas now - and i use these boxes to the east and west coast all the time - typically it runs $8.50 to east/west coast and as the OP says $5 or so within the state.

you can order the boxes on the usps website

yes pricing per zone but flat rate whereas the flat rate box is flat rate irregardless of destination

i actually used one of these boxes to send something to a customer in the virgin islands - worked great

btw - one note, these boxes seem "crappier" in materials than the flat rate boxes so i put more tape - and i believe you are limited to 15 pounds in them. so be aware.

So basically, there is now no reason to ever use a Medium Flat Rate Box, either version, ever again? Because the "Box A" sizes hold about (if not just) as much, and will always be cheaper.

This is great news, but needlessly complicated. I hope they at least phase out some other product line.
