at&t problems - Help on what to do?

The Beginning
Okay, so back in june 2010 my internet contract thing from comcast was over so we had to pay 80 dollars a month or so just for channels 2~28 (basic) and we had 22 mb/s connection (compared to our 50 before). A month later I saw a deal on SD that shows a 29.99 a month (no cable or anything needed) 18 mb/s (I think) internet from comcast. I called a rep and she said that it wasn't available for my area. A couple calls later I talked to another guy and he said that he would tell his supervisor and I had nothing to worry about. So I had the internet for about a month and when the bill came, the price? over 80 dollars. I tried to call back the rep and when I spoke with another rep they said that he was not at work and they would leave him a message. Two days later I called again and it got really annoying cause I have called multiple reps they kept saying either hes not there or they can't contact him and the internet is not available in our area so I just cut off our internet.

(Btw, I got charged for installation of 50~100 dollars. I was like WHAT installation, I had comcast a month ago.. They really want to take our money)

Switching To At&t - August

My dad called At&t when we saw the 19.99 a month deal for internet and he BOUGHT the wireless modem around 80 bucks (wireless g and I already had a friggin wireless N netgear router). So yea the internet was noticeably slow (6 mb/s was the speed we were supposed to get) but the router kept on crashing and giving me these errors like ...

Error

DSL Failed to Connect
The system’s internal DSL modem does not currently detect a DSL signal or is having problems connecting.

To restore your Internet connection:
Verify that the telephone cable is still properly connected between a working wall jack and the system port labeled PHONE LINE.

If your system is connected to a DSL phone filter, make sure it is connected to the jack labeled DSL/HPNA.

Make sure that ALL phones, answering machines, or other devices which connect to a phone jack have a DSL phone filter attached.
If you have never had a working DSL Internet connection, it’s possible your DSL service has not yet been turned on. Contact your Internet service provider for assistance.

If you still do not have Internet connectivity after checking the above, click on the "Check Connection" button below."

every 30 minutes, so I called AT&T, and they CHARGED US for a guy to come and just REPLACE our router, which did nothing because at this very moment I am still crashing.

Comcast again
How convenient, in the mail I got a letter saying comcast 22 mb/s connection w/ power boost was available in our area for 29.99 for a YEAR. But since I'm under AT&T I'm not sure if I can cancel it. My dad says we are in a "contract" but I don't believe him. We have a comcast modem and everything.

Trouble-shooting Problems
Sorry about the long story, if you even read this far, my english is bad.. Well as a temporary solution for now, is there any way to fix my modem. I tried resetting it. And theres also another thing. When I watch a youtube video (like 5 minutes later) my internet download speed jumps to 650 kb/s (its the max speed I can ever get) according to windows gadgets and bitdefender and the internet is HORRENDOUSLY slow and I can't watch any videos, not even 240p. So I close chrome and I still see something using the download speed. I checked the resource center I couldn't find the source using the internet. So I used bitdefender and just blocked google chrome from accessing the internet and there it works. The thing is it isn't only a problem for chrome, its on all web browsers and all the computers in my house. We all have anti viruses (AVG, malwarebytes, bitdefender) we are all clean. The funny thing is, this problem started when I got AT&T. Do you guys have anyidea what's going on.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT - I'm still trying to live on 1 MBp/s instead of 6 Mbp/s download speeds. I have to buffer a 240p video on youtube. Internet still disconnects. They replaced router twice, and they said there is nothing wrong with the line. I'm going to cancel soon because promotion for 19.99 is going to end. They won't let me return the crappy router, they won't let me use my own modem (When I connect it to the phone cable and use the internet it says please contact customer support to use it) and my router, I have to use their stupid 2wire modem. I'm going to buy comcast now and I have no idea to get them to get me 29.99 for 12 months. I have had so much trouble trying to order before. I had to cancel twice. Should I call, order 29.99 for 6 months then go to the (forgot the name and don't know how to get there, retention office?) Thanks in advance.

EDIT 2 - The router disconnects when a wireless N device is connected to it and it keeps disconnecting every couple of minutes. AT&T won't fix it because it's my things that are messing it up so they'll charge me for having them come. I tried two different wireless n cards on two different computers same problem. I connected my wnr 2000 to the router. I connect all my wireless devices too it and it works fine, but REALLY SLOW. I don't want to buy any wireless G card. AT&T ends in a month.

Getting comcast.. I planned to get comcast installed September 9th, but it will be a two year contract for 34.99 a month for 15 mbp/s down 3 mbp/s ups (i think - it's performance) and it includes basic cable and one cable box. Second year will be 49.95. The thing is I just read bad things about comcast. If things go wrong like disconnection and you want to cancel or you are in need of financial aid and you need to cancel cause you can't afford comcast it will cost 250 dollars or so. I'm afraid of this because I heard that we are entering a depression and I'm afraid of that. (Am I over exaggerating? I've read the news lately and seems like this country is starting to fall). Is there any deals for one year comcast or something? I just want internet. It has to be cheap and reliable. And it has to be fast enough to stream at least 480p videos without buffering and allows me to upload videos on youtube. Any ideas on what I should do?

sounds like a bad modem or a bad line. dsl is based on line quality and distance to travel.

you can try to get out of the contract by telling them you are moving and the area you are moving too doesn;t have at&t.

I would strongly complain to AT&T that the new modem you had to pay for them to replace did not fix the problem. If they just want to charge you again to come out and fix it, decline and ask to terminate your contract at no charge. If they say no, then ask for their superior and speak with them. If they agree to come check it out for free, then you might try that before going back to Comcast.

That being said, I had AT&T DSL at my office for years, and Comcast at my home. I constantly had problems with the DSL through AT&T. I have had virtually no problems with Comcast other than the rare outage.

I really want to want to get rid of the modem too, I feel as if we wasted money getting it if we cancel at&t now, do they have a refund policy. Cause I had a friggin dsl modem in my room, my dad wasted 80 bucks, I couldn't even connect my wireless n router to the new router/modem thing. It cuts the download speed in half. Or MORE

I just switched to ATT U-Verse in order to save a few dollars over the rather expensive cable offering in my area (Cox cable) and I would like to tell everyone how much of a mistake that was. After troubleshooting my phone lines, TV, and internet for over 3 days, I had to call ATT and tell them to port my phones back to the cable provider. ATT's service is absolutely terrible, it is extremely unreliable, the video quality is lacking, and who the hell wants to have to reboot their digital TV receiver every day in order to restore television service or the router to restore the phones. ATT obviously still sells DSL/U-Verse solutions to locations that can't actually be serviced which is the most deceptive sales practice of all. My location was within the 3000ft range that they say they can reach, but it still barely worked at all. OP I hope you luck, my advice is to cancel the service, they have a 30 day trial period when you can cancel without penalty.

I'm past 30 days, I'm going to call comcast and ask if they have the 29.99 offer for my area at this time for a year. If they do I'll call at&t and complain and hope they can cancel the contract. (But I'd lose money on the $80 dollar modem/router :/) My dad agrees with this too, we really hate at&t, saving the extra 10 dollars is NOT worth it.

Yeah, you will lose money on the $80 modem/router, yet maybe you can sell it to someone else, or go on Craigslist and see if someone wants to trade something for it.

Did you buy the router thru ATT? If so, call up again and tell them it's messed up and get it replaced. If you didn't buy it there, call the manufacturer and have it replaced under warranty.

I don't use ATT DSL or Comcast, so can't say as to the service reliability, but it seems there is either an issue with the line or the modem or a filter you are supposed to connect to the main connection phone jack. If you have phone service with ATT and that is working fine when the DSL is not, either you have a bad modem or you don't have the filters installed correctly for the DSL to work correctly. If no tech came out and you did a home user install yourself, it's possible you either didn't install the filters correctly or you have a bad filter. I had a friend a couple of years ago who had ATT DSL and a filter had to be installed between the line to the modem and the phone jack. Friend only had one computer, so can't say what needs to happen if you have more computers in other rooms connected to other phone jacks in the house.

I replaced it already. It did nothing

I finally got comcast! 29.99 for first 6 months 34.99 for the 6 months after that and 59.95 afterwards. 25 dollar installation fee. Trying to cancel at&t right now.

Point blank, AT&T sucks. I've been with them for almost 4 years and I don't know how many times they've visited our home. For the last few months, my internet connection goes down at around 5PM and won't go back on til the next day at 9AM. They've done all these sh*t but the problem is never ending.
