Per Gary at Boarding Area [boardingarea.com]:

Via Dan's Deals bmi Diamond Club is offering instant Silver status [boardingarea.com] for new members.

That gets you Star Alliance silver, so free checked baggage on United, Continental, and US Airways, and some priority services.

Status lasts 12 months from signup. Get in one this one right away if you do not already have status with a Star Alliance airline.

And of course if you don't want to actually credit your miles to bmi Diamond Club (though it's great for both really short-haul flights and for paid premium cabin flights), you can check in with the bmi Silver number in the reservation to get free checked bags and then switch your frequent flyer number at the gate.

EDITED TO ADD: the original link that I gave above is dead, however here is the new link [flybmi.com], be sure to enter promo code 1DC6SM .

If you DID get SILVER STATUS, you'll be getting hate mail from BMi, canceling it.
JUST LIKE LAST YEAR.

Dear Dan's Deals: Find a friggin code that's not tied to some insider-only, by-invitation-only deal, or STOP advertising this.

******************************

DEAL IS DEAD - LINK DIRECTS TO PROMO CODE "OWE" AND GIVES BLUE STATUS - DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME TRYING TO GET SILVER STATUS

*** Cancelled ****

"We're pleased to see that you recently joined our Diamond Club frequent flyer programme. However, I'm writing to you because unfortunately the link you used to join was an exclusive by invitation only offer and as noted in our terms and conditions was non transferable.

Regrettably, we will not be honouring the Silver status, and over the next few days your account will be downgraded to Blue status. Our decision is final, and we won't be entering into any further correspondence on this. On a positive note though, our frequent flyer programme is one of the most generous programmes around, and you only need to earn 16,000 membership status miles to earn a Silver membership. When you fly with us, or any of the Star Alliance airlines, you'll reach Silver status in no time at all. You'll also have access to all our offers and promotions, as well as being the first to hear about our great sale fares. We hope you'll still enjoy the benefits of your Diamond Club membership.

Regards

the above direct link is not working anymore, A new link was just posted on DansDeals [dansdeals.com]: https://www.flybmi.com/bmi/en-gb/loyalty-programmes/diamond-club/join-diamond-club.aspx?rec=1DC6SM [flybmi.com] thanks to DansDeals for the deal and the new link.

What this deal will do for you...
US Airways: Exempt from 1st and 2nd checked bag fee
http://www.usairways.com/en-US/traveltools/baggage/baggagepolicies.html

United: Number of bags permitted without excess baggage fees = 1
http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,52649,00.html

Continental: Star Alliance Silver members (other than CO/UA) get their first checked bag free.
http://www.continental.com/CMS/en-US/travel/Pages/CheckedBaggage.aspx

As per Dans Deals blog, even AIR CANADA gives 2 free checked bags

Dont be surprised if they revoke your status in couple of days. This has happened before.

FAQ (Note: This FAQ was started by firewire0 to help clean up some confusion in the thread. If you have any clarifications to make please provide feedback. I'm just assuming this is how it works. I'm not 100% on it. Thanks.)

Will my status be revoked in a few days, weeks, or months after it is confirmed?
Yes, it's very possible. Next question please

My flight is already booked. Can I still take advantage of the 'silver status'?
I'll assume 'yes' - I believe all you should need to do is flash your card when your bags are checked.

Flight isn't booked yet. How do I take advantage?
When booking. Just be sure to put your 'BMI #" in where it asked for your frequent flyer number.

How can I be assure I'll get mileage for US Air, United, CO, etc if I use this number on check-in?
"From reading DansDeals info about this deal, it looks like that, once you enter your BMI Diamond Club number into the United website, it should allow you & everyone else on your itinerary to have up to 2 checked bags for free. Alternatively, you should be able to show your BMI Diamond Club card at the airport counter to get your 2 bags checked for free.

DansDeals also says, "On United for example you can provide one mileage number for mileage accrual and another for Star Alliance benefits." So, you can use the BMI for the free checked bags but collect your freq flyer miles from the trip in your United acct. "
- Thanks karrun

"If you BOOK the flight with the British Midland FF number, you'll get bmi miles if you fly the segments. If you want miles from ANOTHER Star Alliance carrier you have a FF account with, you'll need to get THAT number in the system AFTER you check in and BEFORE you fly.

The BEST way to do that is at the check-in kiosk (remember, DON'T do it BEFORE you give them the bag). The second best, and far more iffy way, is to WAIT UNTIL THE GATE ATTENDANT IS FREE, with no line (or BEFORE they start checking in) and have them do it.

With this method, CAUTION is in order - they MIGHT give you a hard time since they will probably be wise to the fact you're using your bmi number simply to avoid the bag fee."
- Thanks jay_rm

For both reward travel and non-reward travel: What if the flight is already booked? I used my US Airways FF# when I booked online. Can I still take advantage?
"Generally, the way that it works is that if you've signed up after you've booked, then that trip won't count toward any miles on that account BUT you can take advantage of all benefits of the membership like priority boarding, bag fees, etc., right away (assuming that you have the card to show and/or can get their system to recognize your number and that sort of thing.)"
-Thanks Mike A

I've booked my flight with priceline. Can I still take advantage of this offer?
Yes, just flash you BMI silver status when checking baggage.

seems like a great deal to me OP, thanks.
But I'm not quite sure what this means...
And of course if you don’t want to actually credit your miles to bmi Diamond Club (though it’s great for both really short-haul flights and for paid premium cabin flights), you can check in with the bmi Silver number in the reservation to get free checked bags and then switch your frequent flyer number at the gate.

I'm flying United to Cali this summer, how can I use this to get free bags?

Anyone have any idea where this is? I don't see it under any of my mileage plus options. Is it only when I book a flight and have to do it each time?

Star Alliance Silver Benefits
Priority Reservations Waitlisting1 - when there aren't any seats left on your preferred flight, gives you priority should a seat become available.

Priority Airport Standby - gives you top priority when standing by for a flight at the airport.

http://www.staralliance.com/en/be...er-status/

On CO's website, continental gives *A silver a free bag tho. Some airports will let you get in the preferred security/checkin line.

Sorry guys, this really doesn't get you much. shake head
It says you get free checked bags, which is a lot to me. But I can't find on my existing reservation where to put this info. Does anybody know how to add it?

there should be a spot to add any ff/etc id# when you check on your reservation.

or, this can be done manually at the airport. Bring your card, and probably bring a printout of the individual airline's website stating you get a free bag. YMMV per carrier...don't rely on the bmi website.

Is this only good for new reservations or can it be applied to previously reserved flights. I already booked my flight to Vegas for August but would love to use this for the checked bags feature.

Thank you. And yeah, I think you're right. I do not see anything about free baggage allowance on domestic flights. So not very useful, unless I am missing something.
