Yes, it will work with any Nikon DSLR because it has a built in motor. I predict people will poop on this lens because it's a Tamron, it doesn't have VR, etc. But if you're working from a tripod and have software that can correct lens distortion you could learn a lot with this before moving on to expensive toys.

In the D3000/3100 market, I don't see what's wrong with a lens like this. You also don't need VC/VR for many applications. If you're shooting indoors hand held, ya you'll want vc, but you'll need a F/1.4 lens for that too. For tripod work, sports, or anything outside when the sun's out, you don't need VC. There are very few times I can think of shooting at 300mm where VC is needed, except situations like shooting stills outside in the shade, hand held.

I don't know anything about this lens' image quality, but I know the Nikon is a good deal for what you get for $150. For them to price it similarly, I'd imagine it's either comparable, or excels in some areas compared to the Nikon.

From Amazon.com it's actually $128. So it's even cheaper for the Nikon brand.

Nothing against this lens or deal, but seriously? Nearly every application I can think of can use VC at 300mm crop (450mm)...

I don't have any real comparison data, but I'd imagine the Nikon lens to ahve better quality glass and less distortion than the Tamron. But I don't know for sure. Also, people shopping for this lens will probably not be worried about distortion, much less know how to correct for it.

Of course, there is a small percent of the population that do know what they're doing and can work with this lens. But at such a high f/stop and zoom, it would only be good in bright light situaions.

Am I missing something, or is the Nikon lens referred to above just an AF, and Not an AF-S? Personally, I'd take the Tamron with AF-S over the Nikon without it, especially since I'd use it for a newer DX body, like the D3100.
