So it's the day before my trip and autoslash did come through on one of my reservations with a big last minute drop.

For reference, the full 3 day reservation was a basic compact car in AUS on May 23-26. Final AS booking was $65, and Kayak/Carrentalsavers are both at $70 for the same rental agency. Hotwire/priceline were a bit cheaper for one day, on 04/13 but that required a quick purchase that you can't cancel.

I ended up doing a premium car for the 23-25, which I couldn't reserve through most of the discount companies including AS. I got a good deal through some codes from the car rental matrix thread on FW. I then reserved the 25-26 (more expensive due to being a weekday) through priceline at $27. AS hadn't been updating the single day reservation so I'm unsure if they would have eventually beat or not (I cancelled through AS after the priceline bid).

So all in all AS did ok. I question whether they will provide the same service if they don't know who I am (I had wanted my reservation to be anonymous but they located mine after I posted here - it was pretty easy considering the email I used) but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. The last minute appearance of the final price makes planning harder, but IME many rentals are cheaper at the last minute anyway. On the plus side you aren't locked into a reservation as with priceline/hotwire if prices go down, which is nice.

I'm going to consider using them for future rentals, and will probably use their slashed emails as a notice to check kayak and hotwire.

Am I reading that right that you booked a premium car in Austin for $27/day from May 23-25?? If so, I might just reconsider flying and rent a car here and drive to Louisiana instead (and not put the wear and tear on my car ).

I'm literally trying to shave any penny I can off of this trip so much so that I'm looking at breaking down the flight (if I decide not to drive) into 4 legs instead of doing a round trip (AUS-HOU, HOU-MSY then MSY-HOU, HOU-AUS) because that will save me almost $100. Go figure...it's the same dang flights as if I booked just one round-trip ticket on Southwest.

No, the premium car was $53 a day on the weekend. It was something I was wiling to pay extra for. The $27 is for a basic economy.

For your flight I'd highly recommend setting up price alerts with kayak. I saw the price of a recent one way vary anywhere from $280 to $77 in about a month. Lots of one day sales.

You can also track pricing of specific flights with Yapta.com [yapta.com]. I find them very helpful for this sort of thing.

This site has the same interface/software/carriers as kayak/sidestep.

As diljs correctly pointed out, we do the work for you by figuring out the best coupon, but if you reply back with what coupons you're talking about, I can take a look. Not all coupons work in all cases.

Yes that's correct. Some of our customers enter in their own discount codes, but most don't bother. We usually can beat the discount codes that our customers enter with our own, since our database is much more comprehensive and we have the ability to try many codes very quickly.

Even if we can't beat a discount code a customer enters immediately, we'll catch any price drops that happen after booking, so it's highly likely that a customer will save money anyway at some point between the time they book and the time they pick up the rental.

The earlier you book, the more likely you are to save. The fact that it's a free service ain't bad either.

How about coupons posted on your site? I booked one just now noticed it searches without applicable coupons. I have to manually enter the coupon posted on your site for each rental providers!
