thanks op! i bought (well the bf bought for me) some hiking boots last month full price, in anticipation for this coupon. so i've been waiting a month for this! will go return/rebuy soon!

*edit* here's a link [rei.com] to the details on their site. they actually tell you to apply your dividend (and how to do it).

all at the same time while jacking up your credit (store credit cards are the worst)
This isn't actually a store credit card... it's a normal visa that just gives you REI rewards instead of airline rewards or cash back rewards. I think it's 1% back for all purchases, 5% back for all REI purchases in the form of additional dividend.

You can also cash out any REI dividend at any time... both the membership one, and this REI one. If you have an REI credit card, you should always cash out your dividend rather than using it, because you should only make purchases at REI with your card... more cash back. You can use the cashed out dividend to pay off your credit card before any interest comes due.

Since no knowledge seems to be common any more, I'll step up to he podium.

It's not really a store credit card. It's a regular Visa that gives you 5% dividend on REI purchases.

So it has the same rate as a regular Visa, and the inquiry shows on your report as a regular Visa.

As with all credit cards, as long as you keep a low balance (less than half of available credit), and pay the bill in full each month, adding an additional credit card will have a POSITIVE effect on your credit score after about a year.

And, in case you didn't know, if you pay the balance in full every time you use it it doesn't matter what the interest rate is, because you will never pay interest.

So if this somehow "jacks up your credit" it's not REI's fault.

Is it possible to use the coupon more than once or is it linked to your member number?

If you're thinking of buying a bike, now is the time to do it. Yes, the coupon is only valid on REI's own Novara line, but they're generally considered pretty solid bikes for a reasonable cost (even at full price).

This doesn't answer conclusively but even after purchasing a tent this morning at the physical store and using the coupon, it appears that I can apply the coupon to an online order for a backpack Smilie There is still a chance they'd flag it before fully processing and disallow however so am not entirely certain.

I used mine last year in the same manor. I purchased a tent in store and the footprint online for 20% off both.. no issues. I've never had REI cancel an order.

Awesome. I will buy EVERYTHING.

Although it kinda ticks me off that I just bought trekking poles and a headlamp for $140 full price two weeks ago.

I remember getting it at least twice a year. Once in the spring and the fall.

They also send out coupons for their outlet store too.

Also, don't forget about your local stores used gear / attic sales, I've gotten some amazing deals on practically brand new items...last year the GF got a jetboil for 20 bucks because the person who returned it said it took too long to biol water (her's took about 20 seconds longer than my jetboil flash).

I picked up a ultralightweight backpack for my upcoming trip. I also need to get a ThermaRest Neo Air so hopefully another 20% off coupon comes out before August.

Seems like they used to require you to use your dividend to use the 20% off coupon. Since that's no longer the case, its definitely better to use the coupon (with REI Visa if you have it) then cash out the dividend later.

Just picked up a GoPro camera that never seems to be on sale. Probably not the cheapest price ever but saved $60 over most places right now.
