What to do with a bad ESN Phone

Kolto 24,045 2,237 March 25, 2011 at 05:14 PM
So, i have a bad ESN Droid Incredible, i know its bad as i reported it as stolen back in december and had insurance claim for it already.

Well i got my car washed today, and they found the phone in my car.

Went to verizon, they said the ESN was blocked by Asurion

Called Asurion, they said nothing they can do as to get the deductible back has to happen within a month

So...do i just have a sleek and expensive paperweight? Or can i flash to another carrier or something.

I doubt its a paper weight because I see them on ebay and people claim that they can be flashed to cricket.

You need to flash it with a different esn from a known good phone. The issue is there is some law that says you cant and its hard to find info on how to do it.

For it to work on VZW that way would be the only way, but it is not quite legal. Similar to the reason why you can't change a VIN on a car.

Asurion, is probably just VZW's Insurance, meaning that Cricket or Sprint might allow that phone on their network still. It will just show up as an unknown phone in their systems. Now if they allow that kind of ESN Swap, I don't know, but their systems probably wont block it.

Donate it to a battered women's shelter. The staff give them to the residents. Even with a bad ESN, it can dial 911. And, good karma.

"not quite legal" Roll

Couldn't you sell it on eBay for parts?

Steve Gibson on password policies [grc.com]: I mean, I don't get this change it every eight weeks. ... It's not as if passwords are traveling by camel after they've been stolen, going to the bad guys, and so there's, like, some weird eight-week window, like, oh, we're going to change your password so that the stale password no longer works. ... And all this does is make IT people despised because users, who are not dumb, they think, why am I - why do I have to do this? What problem is this solving?

Turn off the cell radio, you have a DroidPod Touch! (I use my old Droid 1 as a media player only).

while that USED to be a good idea, it is no longer a good idea. some IDIOT might get a hold of it and start calling 911 a bunch of times. then guess who they are going after - YOU! this has happened and will continue to happen.

for safety purposes they say now to destroy your old phones even if you reset them back to factory settings. even though you delete your info (contacts, texts, pictures, emails, etc) the info is still there until it is over written.

that sucks, but if you don't want to keep it as a meda player you can just sell it to somebody who might be able to use it Smilie

That's the case with hard drives, it's a bit murkier with flash memory as is often found on cell phones. I think more likely people are getting tracked by tracing who bought that phone via the ESN. Either way though, this phone was reported lost/stolen. The original owner won't be held liable.
