is an external sound card with ps3 possible?

bladeap 340 65 April 5, 2011 at 12:17 AM
I'm curious as to if an external sound card can be hooked up to a ps3. I have a logitech x540 (5.1 surround) system. It has the "matrix" option which helps create an imaginary 5.1 surround sound. However, would using say the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro USB Sound Card, help create TRUE 5.1 surround sound? I assume I'd need to connect it to a PC in order for it to work tho...Any response would help, thanks!

The PS3 is capable of "TRUE" surround sound. You just need a way to convert digital audio over HDMI/optical to the analog electrical inputs your speaker set expects. That usually means a "receiver".

As for the USB soundcard, I doubt the PS3 will have drivers. So, you won't be able to use it directly with the PS3.

And as for running PS3 surround audio through a PC, the PS3 is capable of surround audio output via HDMI or optical (TOSLINK) digital (SPDIF). Electrical/RCA digital/SPDIF would be available via an adapter. You'd need a PC with an appropriate capture card.

Your speakers aren't capable of "true" surround sound without an analog signal coming from a PC sound card decoder. Your best bet is to use the matrixed sound or buy a real receiver & speaker set.

AFAIK, you can't use a USB sound card with PS3. I'm guessing that there's no way to install drivers, nor are there any actually written for the PS3 OS.

I see thanks for the replies! I figured as much with the x-540s...lol

I've read in an old forum a while back that it IS possible to use a Creative X-fi with optical in to connect Ps3 optical to the X-fi and have the audio decoded by the PC, and come out from my 5.1 speakers. Would that be doable? And would I need a good decoder?

The creative Xfi would serve as the decoder. You'd have to look at the soundcard documentation to see if it supports dolby digital decoding from the optical in. It's doable, but it means having your comp on any time you wanted sound from your PS3.
