I am confused which cpu processor is faster between i7 2 GHz and i5 2.3 GHz.
I checked on official website, the i5 has higher clock speed. so it should faster than i7. am i right??

How does PassMark account for the extra two cores, and thus the extra four threads the i7 can run? If the OP doesn't have a use for four cores, the i5 is going to be faster and lower power.

Steve Gibson on password policies [grc.com]: I mean, I don't get this change it every eight weeks. ... It's not as if passwords are traveling by camel after they've been stolen, going to the bad guys, and so there's, like, some weird eight-week window, like, oh, we're going to change your password so that the stale password no longer works. ... And all this does is make IT people despised because users, who are not dumb, they think, why am I - why do I have to do this? What problem is this solving?

No idea considering OP asked nothing but, "which is faster?" Maybe a little more information would help.

this. - I remember seeing a similar thread somewhere where someone was comparing a desktop CPU to a laptop CPU and wondering why the desktop was faster

Higher clock speed != Faster CPU.

I know this is apples to oranges, but it still illustrates that point. A 2.66GHz i7-920 can easily trounce a 3.4Ghz II X4 965 in most applications. They're both quad-cores, but on different architectures.

For an i5 vs i7 comparison you're going to need to know if the programs you use can make use of the extra threads on the i7.

tl;dr: The clock speed isn't what makes it "fast", speed depends how well a program can utilise the capabilities of the CPU. Don't fall into that trap.

keep in mind i7 probably has a greater resell value, should you go with that route later on
