Looking for some advice about tablets
Looking for some advice here - bought my wife a Kindle for her birthday, but since she uses mainly PDFs, it's really difficult to read. I convinced her to give my ipad a try, and she really liked it, so I think I'm gonna turn it over to her instead of getting her the Kindle DX.
So that leaves me in the lurch for a tablet browser/reader/PDF viewer (which is 95% of what I use it for). The ipad was a very slick device, but I really didn't like the Apple big-brother system, so I'm inclined to look to Android for a platform. Still, I've read that some of the features (viewing angles, thickness) on the ipad2 are superior to the Xoom/G Tablet/Samsung/other Android. My budget is $700 and it's got to be one of the 10" class devices. 3g/4g not necessary or desired.
My main gripe with Apple is iTunes. I hate the fact that it's impossible to put more (large) files on my ipad from another computer besides the one where I have itunes, and if i reformat the PC where I have itunes installed, then I basically have to reformat my ipad.
On the other hand, I like the Goodreader (great pdf viewer) app a lot, and the desktop connect app is very cool too. I'm not sure if Android has analogs for these yet. On the whole though, I don't use many apps, so the size of the app collection isn't much of a factor for me.
A concern for the Xoom and other similar pads is the wider screen. Since I use it in portrait a lot, the higher aspect ratio is concerning. Right now I only do very light gaming on my ipad (prefer DS or PSP), but if actual games (not "casual game" shovel ware - with a couple exceptions) are going to be released on either system, that could play into the decision too.
Your (rational and well-conceived) thoughts on this are appreciated. I know there are many fans out there that believe that anything the opposing side does is crap. I'm not particularly interested in those viewpoints.
tl;dr - looking for tablet advice. budget >$700. usage is web browsing, pdf reading, email, and some multimedia. Don't like itunes and would love to be able to use a thumbdrive to transfer directly drag/drop files. app stores not tremendously important. portrait-reading-friendly is important
