FYI - No Battery or Charger included despite showing one in the picture

I bought one of these new a while ago. It works pretty well. When used with a fully charged battery it trims pretty well. I've gone through thick weeds with no problem. The trimmer is a little top heavy because of the battery, and there's no carrying strap. Plus you won't have to pay for gas + oil.

I know it will work, but will this perform OK with the older NiCd batteries? One HDPO review says yes, but I'd like more input if anyone has experience.

I bought one of this with the lithium battery less than a month ago. It is light weight with great convenience, but the battery only lasted 15~25 min of constant use with a full charge. Only enough to get trough the front yard and not the back yard (I am in Texas, it can be considered bigger yard than many other states). Plan to return it this week.

Which Lithium battery, P104, P106, etc?

the biggest battery lasts about an hour with heavy duty trimming, used it all last year.

How much does a battery and charger cost for this?

Good point! Didn't know there are different lithium battery models.

I bought this [homedepot.com] exact model. Although it does not specific the type of the battery besides being a 18[V] lithium, it does look very much like the P106 [homedepot.com] since it seems slimmer than the P104.

UPDATE: It labels "P103, 24WH" on the battery. It is definitely not a P104 as it does not have on-board fuel gauge to indicate how much power is left. Plus P104 appears to be 2.4[AH]. That is equivalent to 43.2[WH] for a 18[V].

I suspect that while "new" your battery will no longer accept a full charge.

The newest P2002 kit I've seen was stamped July 2010, now pushing 9 months old. It's been my experience that the "big" P104 battery (like the one in this kit) can self-discharge to the point where it starts to cause irreversible damage in this much time. While still usable, it's probably operating at well under it's rated 2400mAH capacity. Earlier this month I came across a P2005 kit, which I purchased immediately. The "big" P104 battery was dated January 2011 and tested right around its rated capacity.

Ryobi currently makes three 18v batteries: the P100 NiCD, the P103 Compact Lithium Ion, and the P104 Lithium Ion. The P100 is rated 1700mAH, the P103 is rated 1300mAH, and the P104 is rated 2400mAH. I use weed cutter and bush wacker to trim my yard.

Its a manual job. No batteries need.
