I ended up buying this:
http://www.amazon.com/Skooba-R702...070&sr=8-2 when my last free bag died. it's not perfect, but it toes the line between style and work acceptable, and it does hold my widescreen 15" laptop nicely with the power cord to one side, or my portfolio for work when I'm not traveling with my laptop. I've had it for almost a year now, and it hardly shows any wear at all, all the straps and connections seem to be very heavy duty, very well made "Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives" - James Madison

One of these. http://www.customhide.com/scholar...tment.html. I've had it for almost 10 years. Lifetime warranty/free repairs.
I was using Timbuk2 messenger bags but they weren't a good fit with the offices I was traveling to (older, stuffier crew - lots of cufflinks) |

We made love by the ocean, as the waves crashed around you Sunsets never were so bright and the skies never so blue You opened up into my arms, and we laughed as I held you I'll never go back to Georgia, not at least till I have to |

Attached a photo of it. I don't think Ogio makes this model anymore. Work also gave another messenger bag that looked well, Too rounded, small, shiny, and kinda fruity. Gave that one away. Then, there's this...

when i signed up, i didn't know how much traveling i'd be doing, so i requested a messenger bag leather case. [targus.com]
turns out i travel less than once a year, so i requested a backpack. [lenovo.com] i much prefer the latter for everyday use. |

i use a 2L growler to carry my work with me...
