I heard this most recent episode was the best one so far this season. woot Can't wait! I'll have to get caught up on the last three now!

I need to just accept that this isn't a copy of the books, but maybe a retelling and a refresher for what happened, in case I forgot. It will be interesting to see Jaqen H'ghar's role since I've forgotten some of it.

Plus my boyfriend has some theories, and I'm hoping I can catch onto them without having to re-read the books. I just finished all but one of them!! Ranting

The problem with the show is there is just too much in the books to convey in a 10 hour series. Characters are cut, plots are shifted. Add to that, they cut some important plot-line to give the token brothel scene its weekly airing.

Then again, some of the changes work. Arya being Tywin's cup-bearer instead of Roose. Margaery Tyrell's character seemingly being combined with QoT.

The show it a great show, but this season does A Clash of Kings much less justice than it did for Game of Thrones. I'm really curious what will have with SOS.

I stole this post from another forum, but it essentially got me thinking about those random brothel or nude scenes they throw in. Going back, they do fill in a lot of important backstory for those who didn't read the books.

The cynic in me thinks they don't believe a fantasy intrigue plot can hold viewers on it's own merits.

Have a character with complex motivations? Have him explain them during a sex scene. That way the viewer will not change the channel when their eyes glaze over and they start to nod off during the exposition.

They've done it with most of the major players that aren't a Stark or a Lannister. They even had one plodding scene with the grand maester guy that for the life of me I couldn't figure out, until I realized he was providing back story for the people who didn't read the books.
Heck, even that brothel scene with the 2 girls going at it gets put in prospective. You have Littlefinger so obsessed with Catelyn that being around 2 girls going at it does nothing for him.

Who was QoT?

I can see how Arya being Tywin's cup-bearer would work out better. Some things definitely do work, but some things just won't. It seems like Ros (if I got her name right) is kinda the combination of all the whores we heard about. It's just stupid. I don't care about Ros, but I cared about Alayaya (or however her name was spelled). Secret

The Reeds are important, but I can see them being added later on. They bring up important information that Osha doesn't / shouldn't know.

That's true. And I noticed that with Theon's scene on the boat. Sick If it weren't for the dialogue I wouldn't have been able to watch it.

GRRM does usually seem to have lots of dialogue involved in his sex scenes in the books too, now that you mention it. There are things we learn about people that we otherwise wouldn't see on TV because they never have anything of those "thought bubble" kinds of moments at all. Not even flashbacks. We never really get to see inside someone's head without them talking (whereas in the books we got to read some of their thoughts).

It's just... when it comes to some of them could they make them a bit nicer? Oh and they really don't need to show Theon's girls :shudder: Especially if he has more like that girl on the boat!

The Reeds seemed like an odd cut but they figured too much is going on there too add another two characters. They might add them later or just completely side-step them and make Osha take over their roll.

QoT = Queen of Thorns. They probably cut that and just combined her motives with Marg.

True, but the thing is those scenes make some things too out there. Like Littlefinger outright stating what he's thinking when it wasn't so forthright in the books. Again, during his conversation with Cersei in the show talking about power. Worse was the conversation with Cat stating how he loved her since he was a kid as he delivered Neds bones. It was just too forward for Littlefinger's character. He's subtle, not forward.

I do agree, some of the scenes do add backstory, but is it worth it at the expense of removing another piece from the story?

All in all, it's still a great show. I don't blame them for the story shortcuts and changes as there is just so much in the ASOIAF universe to fit into a show with strict budgets.

Scratchchin I am horrible with remembering some details (part of why I need to watch the show, to refresh my memory). The Queen of Thorns, that's the old frustrated grandma, right? Oh! But I was so looking forward to the scene where
But I can see adding them together, though. Sadwalk

I'm not sure Osha could explain things to Bran that the Reeds know, though. She's just a wildling with no real background in the rest of the kingdom... she wouldn't know things like some of the story about like the Reeds apparently know about it...

Maybe he will just encounter them next season...

It just seems to me they are making Marg must less 'innocent' so far as they did in the books. Just look at her talk with Littlefinger.

As for the Reeds, you might be right. But it's odd to start Osha off with their roles and switch to it later. Viewers realistically wouldn't know the difference. Us readers on the otherhand, know this would cause another some-what significant change in the story.

Sadwalk I am not caught up on this season. I don't even know if I've seen Marg. yet this season... Unsure

I might need to do some rewatching already! laugh out loud I have the worst memory ever.

I could see them portraying her as less innocent though. The small folk think she is innocent... That's the important part. We all know the truth!!! Actually... I'm not really sure. Where I last left off with her, I was a bit confused. Dontknow

Okay, so I am slowly getting caught up. We just finished the 8th episode of this season.

Tell me, as a viewer who has not read the books: Are some of these scenes working out just fine for you? Like, they don't feel awkward or poorly put together?

I don't want to sound like I am ranting about how they aren't making it like the book. I really honestly just want to know if these scenes worked well for those who have not read it. Because they sure as heck don't work for me, and I want to be reassured that it is just because I've read it, not because it is actually bad.

Lord, some of the Republicans are getting upset because they used a head of Bush as one of the severed heads in season one. No one caught it at the time but when the DVD came out, the commentary mentioned this and now a bunch of people are up in arms over it. laugh out loud

Quote :
On the DVD commentary for "Game of Thrones" Season 1, io9.com noted [io9.com] that the show's creators used George W. Bush's head -- with some "Rock of Ages"-like long locks. But it was only out of necessity, they said.

"George Bush's head appears in a couple beheading scenes [io9.com]," "Game of Thrones" creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss explained with a laugh in the commentary for the Season 1 DVD. "It's not a choice. It's not a political statement. It's just we had to use whatever heads we had around."
Go here and read the readers replies at the bottom. Funny stuff.
