Budgeting discussion
This thread is not for folks who think that those who are low income are lazy.
We live on 780.00 a month. My husband became disabled about four years ago. I have always worked at a non profit organization helping families and kids learn and grow and become self sufficient.
About 18 mos ago I began having problems remembering to pay bills and such. Next I started having strange medical issues. Needless to say I am no longer the dynamo at our organization anymore. I am the founder and now I am in all likelyhood going to be closing it after 11 years of operation.
I worked the Census and had unemployment afterwards. I am getting help with school to get and education to do something new. That will take probably 3 more years. I did complete 50 credit hours in the past year so I am going as fast as I can.
We were making it just fine until gas prices went sky high.
At 4.10 a gallon we live 14 miles from town.
I have my mini van it is a 96 and paid for. It gets right at 16mpg So each trip to town is 8.00 A trip to Walmart is almost 30 miles. So that has come to a halt so has Walgreens etc.
I have to go to town 5 days a week. There is no way around that.
Our budget breaks down as follows
50 a week for gas. Unless I have to go to the Dr that week. That is 20.00 more. It is almost 45 miles one way to the Dr. I go to the Dr right now an average of twice a month.
My prescriptions are 40.00 a month. Those are meds I can not get with Prescription assistance programs like you see on TV. Thankfully they pay for the Advair and some other stuff.
Groceries I spend 200.00
Paper goods and consumables like cleaning products 10.00
Electricity is 150.00 a month. It was much less but our company raised rates and (fees)
I drive our trash to the gas station on the way to town so we do not pay that bill anymore.
I have Pageplus for our phones they are 27.00 each using callingmart codes.
Dr visits are 30.00 each time for me. My husband has insurance so we do not pay for him thank god.
Car insurance is 35.00 a month.
We do not have a mortgage payment Thankfully. We sold our home about four years ago and began to live debt free before this happened so we have been able to make it until gas prices went nuts.
We do not pay water. We have our well we put in three years ago.
At this point we make it but barely. If the van needs any work I am TOAST.
I looked for part time work in town but it is all service industry and my stupid joints will not let that happen for now. Its really discouraging to go from living frugally because it is a choice to living this way and knowing it is not an option to move out of it right now.
