Turn American Express/AMEX Reward Cards into Cash

Bondgamer 195 May 8, 2011 at 08:28 AM
Several rebate processors are now in bed with AMEX in giving out reward cards which are a pain to use and can not simply be deposited at your local bank. The rebate terms said I could bring it to a bank to deposit but that was not even true! If you don't use the cards for 6 months they start charging you $2 a month and you have to know the exact amount every time you use it. These things are designed to discourage their use.

If you want the cash you have to go through an extra step. When you get the card(s) call the phone number on the back (1-800-297-7327). You have to input the card number and security code. From the options, select 5 (more options) and then 0 to speak with someone.

You must say the magic phrase "I got this card from doing a rebate, I would like to request a check be sent to me". If you mention the word cash anywhere you will likely be denied unless the CSR is already familiar with this process. If they say they can't do it, then you need to convince them otherwise because they can. Tell them it said you could do this when you filled out the rebate form.

If you have multiple cards they can all be combined into one check. They will give you a confirmation number you should write down in case the check never arrives. The check will arrive within 20 business days.

Problem is that some of us don't pay for gas, groceries, or other misc bills. Being able to put this into my checking account is extremely convenient since I'm saving up for some nice things at IKEA that was just recently built in my state.

Oh, and I was able to get a CSR to turn my $75 + $20 cards into a $95 check just now. Didn't ask me any suspicious questions or anything.
I WISH I didn't pay for gas, groceries and other misc. bills. do you live with mom or are you just wealthy.

I don't think someone who's wealthy needs to save up to buy things from Ikea.

My favorite is to usually convert them into amazon gift cards or into stop and shop gift cards. Meant to rep you, but I realized that it cant be done in this forum.

I called the number in the OP and followed instructions. The CSR said it will take 10-20 business days to get check. She did not ask why do I want a check. Just asked me to call back in 2 days to get a claim number. Not sure if it makes a difference.

there's another option instead of waiting/talking to customer service.

You can get a free card reader. I think it's like a 2.5ish percent fee. So if it's a big card, then its not worth it , but if it's like a $20, you get 19.50 in your bank account without any hassle/waiting.

If you charge yourself too often, they will shut you down.

Thanks OP! I will have plenty of these cards in the near future, and I prefer using my CCs when possible. Hello 5x+ travel points. Smilie

Also just did this. Did the call about a week ago, said check would be here in 10-20 days. We'll see how long it actually takes.

Just paid my Ebay bills with the Amex ones that I get from rebates. Normally, Ebay just take cash out of my account so I prepaid ahead of time.

Has anyone tried taking them to a bank to see if they can pull a cash advance on them?

You can also get the refund deposited via ACH in 15 business days rather than waiting 20 days for a check.
