A Law Student Plays the Race Card — and Gets Busted, Big Time

It’s time for more race-related drama from UVA Law School. Back in February, Elie wrote about a UVA Law party that featured Confederate flag decor. Now I will tell you about a 3L’s fabricated tale of racial harassment by university police.

In late April, Johnathan Perkins, a third-year law student at UVA, wrote a letter to the editor that was published in Virginia Law Weekly, the law school’s student newspaper. In his letter, Perkins claimed that he was harassed by UVA university police while walking home from a party, purportedly on account of his race (he’s African-American). Perkins said he was moved to share the story “because it is important for my classmates to hear a real-life anecdote illustrating the myth of equal protection under the law.”


On May 5, after a thorough investigation into allegations that University of Virginia police officers had mistreated an African-American law student, the individual acknowledged that his story had been a fabrication.

“I wrote the article to bring attention to the topic of police misconduct,” he said in a written statement. “The events in the article did not occur.”






It's quite amazing how idiotic the student body of UVA is, and how they bought into this hoopla.

It's a shame that this man won't be imprisoned for a very long time.

Pretty sad really. I don't doubt that racism exists, I don't have my head in the sand that far, but to make shit up on top of other things that DO exist is pretty terrible. What a douche bag.

It's really no different than when all the Duke professors and students got onboard the White Kids are Evil Rapists bandwagon in the Lacrosse case fabrication.

I'm so glad that the race card backfired in his face! It's about time! The race card is being so overused in this country nowadays that when an actual act of racism takes place, it generally isn't taken seriously or is dismissed. All people like this student are doing is cheapening the civil rights movement and all the hard work that people put in throughout the years to achieve racial equality.

Yeah, I remember this...it was pretty sad.

I blame media a lot for how anyone accused gets thrown to the wolves far before anything is proved. The people themselves are also partially to blame, I'm not going to exclude myself though, I'm ashamed that I have on occasion also fallen for the early blame shit.

Hopefully, the school's Honor Council/Court will expel this guy and prevent him from getting his J.D.

This is false, every complaint is taken very seriously, and generally leads to negative consequences for the accused, often even if the charge has no merit.

The mere threat of accusation is enough to blackmail people into actions that are favorable to the would be accuser, or to pre-emptively silence them, (even self censorship).

I agree. Not only is this awful, but it only makes it WORSE for the real targets of racism, because people will always think of those fabricating stories or trivially playing the race card.

So a person cheats and a herd of people are ready to condemn NAACP (and by proxy blacks).
