Thread Details

I just picked up a Schwinn 700C Trailway mens bike at Target for $199.99. Regular price is $239.99. The bike actually gets pretty decent reviews for a department store bike. The sale ends on 5/21. Someone in my area (Melbourne Florida) is scooping them up from the 3 local targets as fast as they can build them. Same guy!

Seems like a decent deal. I recommend buying brand name bikes from a LBS if the budget allows.

Which reviews in particular? Why did you decide to not buy it?

40lbs seems too much even for a hybrid bike, especially given that it is aluminium.

I bought the women's version of the bike yesterday for my girlfriend. I've compared to the local bike shops and this bike seems to be a better deal @ $200. $200 will barely get you anything at a LBS. Maybe a single speed cruiser or something, but not a 21-Speed with Shimano Components like this TrailWay. After owning it for a day I can speak my pros and cons:

PROS:
-21 Speed Shimano Tourney Deraileur (probably lowest line, but hey it's Shimano)
-Trigger shifters instead of twist grip
-700C Wheels
-Aluminum Frame, although it's not a light bike. Average weight for it's size.
-RST Shocks - not anything great, but for a girl that rides casually around town it's sufficient
-Quick Release Front Wheel - Big selling poing for me b/c I need to take the wheel off to get it to fit into my Honda Fit
-White & Seafoam Green Color - My gf's #1 priority in bike selection, lol.

CONS:
-Not bought from a LBS so no free tuning or lifetime adjustments or anything
-Most likely will need adjustments upon purchase
-Brake pads are horrible. They're not that hard rubbery material you'd expect from a pad. They're semi-soft. Imagine the friction of scraping a wooden pencil against the sidewalk. That's how brakes should work. The brakes on these would be compared to rubbing chalk on the sidewalk. Slippery. Good thing decent brake pads are only $10. I'm going to end up giving her my brake pads from my road bike and buying better ones for myself.

Other than that it seems to be a great deal!

Pedal fell off after three weeks and store refused to return money and so on.

That's a store issue rather than a bike issue. Store didn't assemble it properly, and refused to return the money for it. I got it in writing from the store manager that since it had not been professionally assembled, she would refund me the entire price, even if used, if the construction of the bike was flawed, and a 90-day no questions asked return period. With those in writing from the store manager, I feel safe enough buying this bike from Target.
