naaaahhhh. just turn off the ringer/text and email alert sound so nothing rings or dings. and don't take pictures. and then you're fine.

You don't really need to leave your cell phone.just say you left it in your car.They can't actually search you.The most they can do is ask for ID to confim tickets in some cases.

Depending on the city & popularity of the movie, security sometime does search you & wand you with a metal detector. Other times they just make you check in your cell phone into paper bags or return them to your car. But in general they don't make a big deal as long as people turn it off before the movie starts.

Glad I've never encountered this. And I am not willing to be subjected to it, either.
If a movie theater EVER asks to search me, wand me or ID me, for going in to a theater with tickets to see a movie,
1. I will leave
2. I will boycott that theater and that chain forever and tell everyone I know to do the same.

There is a limit to how much I am willing to have my privacy violated.

"Folks, please turn off your cellphones" is enough of an announcement to remind people to do so and be courteous. I don't need the TSA treatment for going to see a movie!

And before someone says New York is different - I've been to movies in NYC, Boston (two 9/11 cities) and Chicago. Big enough, crowded enough. It's just the principle.

LOL. Good thing you don't go to screenings in metro Detroit, then. For some screenings they make you check your cell phones, for MOST screenings they wand us, and for ALL screenings you are expected to turn your phone off during the film. They say that if you answer your phone/check your email/etc during the movie you will be thrown out, and that if you need to do that you have to go outside the theater.

It is simply their anti-piracy attempt (not really a noise/disturbance issue). You absolutely do NOT have to be "subjected to" this type of search. The movie theater and/or security/screeing co also absolutely do not have to let you in to their FREE screenings though either.

Yeah, Avatar, Tron3D, and Mr. Popper's Penguins (WTF) all required us to leave our cellphones in the car or put them in a plastic bag. All three were different movie theatre chains & studios, so maybe it has to do with the marketing firm responsible for organizing the screenings. But the press was allowed to hold on to their phones

It has to do with the movie studio releasing the film. They hire their own security to watch for anti-privacy. Yes & the press always get to bring in their phones.

asking someone - politely - to leave their phone in the car is one thing.
wanding them, patting them down and getting them to go through metal detectors whole other dimension.

that is where my beef lies.

yes i am well aware it's a free screening. but whether it's free or paid, if a movie theater ever seeks to pat me down to go watch a movie, well, they can keep their theater. that's all i was saying.

But that IS what they're doing (generally). ASKING people politely to take their phones to their cars. Unfortunately people who want to pirate films are unlikelyto heed a polite request and so we are ALL subjected to wanding. NEVER have I been "pat down" (unless the wand set off an alarm and the guy "groped" my jacket pocket to confirm keys were the culprit). Movie theaters are not installing (stand alone) metal detectors for screenings so you may be overly paranoid (or have seen things I haven't) though I've seen SCHOOLS with them! I have no beef with a request and confirmation situation if that's what it takes. I have FAR more of a problem with waiting for a long time to get the chance to get in and with people saving spots in line ahead of me for others who didn't bother to show as early as I did. Yup, I'd rather deal with a very minor inconvenience than pay what they're asking for the (low quality) films these days. It's a choice. You choose no? Fair enough.

does anyone know when harry potter screenings will be released.. or if they will?
