TEXAS: Discounts off passenger car Texas State Inspection

In all but a handful of counties in Texas, you an get your car inspected anywhere since all they require is a safety inspection.

For those of us who live in counties with the large metropolitan centers, there is an additional charge because there is an additional emissions test. So we have to pay $40.

i think you guys are talking about registration which has to be paid in the county where your car is registered..inspections can be done anywhere in the state

I guess if you car is registered in an emission test county, you can only get your state inspection done in the same county. Unless you get a shop that is not as 'careful'. Hate getting taxed twice!!

My 2 cents - never take your car to get inspected anywhere they can sell you something. There are stations that do only inspections and sell nothing else. Not sure if these are everywhere in Texas, but we have a few in the North Dallas suburbs and in Lewisville that are green and white facilities that look like former gas stations. Everyone else makes a bad habit of not passing you unless you buy something like new belts, wipers, etc.

I don't know if the county matters any more, at least in practice. I used to live in Rockwall county and always got inspected in Dallas because that's where the discounts are.

For once, something is cheaper in New Jersey than Texas... NJ State inspections are FREE :-)

In my experience,most of the gas station owners in Houston are dishonest in terms of state inspection. They want to see your car is failing emission test and force you to replace lot of stuff in your car for a hefty amount of money. I believe state inspection is another name for earning money for gas station owners.

This is not funny. It happened to me in my 350z last year.

I have seen and used the one place by Ohio & headquarters in the shell gas station. This guy usually has a $7 off, atleast use to.

Lately, I am doing the Free car wash with somekind of detailing which is working out good for me.

I had a guy inspect my car and he stuck something in the gas cap tester to make it pass. I didn't say anything. I'm sure that's totally illegal somehow. That's the type of shop I want to go to. Used to live in Frisco, TX
