Deal Details

Here are the normal prices that nearly everyone charges for the annual state inspection:

In Dallas, the normal fee for passenger cars is $39.75. Sometimes you can find places that give $5 off, but I've actually found a few places here in Dallas that offer $10 off this price consistently:

City Tire
1829 Belt Line Road, Garland, TX
(972) 414-3400

International Auto & Tire
2009 South Garland Avenue, Garland, TX
(972) 278-8218 ‎

Please post if you know of other large-discount state inspection stations, not just Dallas area.

How about Houston?
Chevron station at Dairy Ashford and Harwin (Alief Clodine) gives $5 off. Same for a shop at the corner of Wilcrest and Harwin (across from the Shell gas station) or garage shop at Beechnut and Kirkwood.

Not a guarantee but if you've been a customer of Firestone Auto Service center in the past, they will send you special promo coupon (last year they sent me a $5 off any service, State Inspection included coupon but not this year). So a hit-n-miss at best.

For once, something is cheaper in New Jersey than Texas... NJ State inspections are FREE :-)
Well it's free at the inspection station but the cost is built into the vehicle registration. Although only having emission inspections now and only having to go every two years is pretty nice. Used to have to wait in line forever while they checked every little thing. Now you're in and out so fast unless your check engine light is on.

There are some states that do no inspections at all. There's the ultimate Slick Deal. Although maybe we all pay for it in the end.

My 2 cents - never take your car to get inspected anywhere they can sell you something. There are stations that do only inspections and sell nothing else. Not sure if these are everywhere in Texas, but we have a few in the North Dallas suburbs and in Lewisville that are green and white facilities that look like former gas stations. Everyone else makes a bad habit of not passing you unless you buy something like new belts, wipers, etc.
I've gone to one of those in Grapevine (off Northwest Hwy) since I moved there in 2002. Took my car and (now) ex-wife's car there for years. In fact, they inspected my car last June.

I only had one vehicle "fail" once and that was because the gas cap on my car was going bad.

He called me out to the garage, put my gas cap on and a couple of seconds later the machine said it failed. He took one out of the box, put it on the machine and it passed.

I thought it was a "scam" as well so I asked how much for the new gas cap. He said $10. I thought a gas cap should only cost $2-3 so I told him I would be back. Went to Auto Zone 1/2 mile down the road and the gas cap cost me $10.15 after tax.

Went back and it passed.

Then again, I used the inspection time as a reminder to replace air filter, blades and oil change that day (the oil people refill washer fluid, tire pressure, etc).

worth a day trip to SA. i used to take it to guy and the whole thing took maybe 2 minutes.
I would drive in the garage bay, roll down window, he would start scrapping the sticker off, then apply new sticker, ask for money (14 and change), i would reverse out, and on my way.
Most of the shops on the west side of the city have this same process. You will know your in the rt area once you notice a car repair place every other building.

Car Spa doesn't have a discount ($39.50), but they throw in a free car wash and they have free coffee. I usually go there figuring that's about $5 better than the other full-price options.

They've also passed my car with a check engine light before Smilie

You'll spend the extra $5 getting anywhere gas prices are so high. But still Cheaper than Jersey. Wink
