RCA / Toslink Audio Adapter for Xbox 360 and Xbox 360 Slim $1.69 + s/h @ monoprice

Yep, they make all kinds of good sh*t. Been using this adapter with my COD:MW2 console everyday since it was released. Works like a champ. I use it to route the sound through a Creative DDTS-100 Decoder to my computer speakers while using an HDMI cable for video to my 2nd computer monitor.

Can someone please explain how this is used? I have had my 360 for a few years but I know it has the optical cable port. I'm looking for a surround sound system, nothing extremely fancy but I use my Xbox as a DVD player. Is this something I should have in order for my Xbox to work with surround sound? I was under the impression no...

You only need this if you need to use HDMI cable for video but can't use the audio that's also passed over that HDMI cable, as in my previous post where I explained why I needed to use this adapter. You use this adapter if you need to output sound through an optical toslink cable or a 2channel RCA cable (the red and white ports) while also using the HDMI cable for video. If you use the VGA, composite or component cables to output video from your 360 then those adapters use the same port as this adapter and should also already have the optical toslink or RCA audio out ports built-in like this deal's audio adapter.

If you don't need the toslink and just the rca plugs then you can also ghetto rig this up.

Man I didn't realize I'm such a noob, I'm still not sure how to use this. Is why I could never get a movie playing on Xbox360 to play out of my Dennon receiver/surround setup? I use HDMI cable(s) for my tv/cable box. Surround worked from the tv but never when switched to the Xbox. Thanks for the response. I'm not one to waste money needlessly, for the most part, but at this price I may just pick one up to have just in case.

You can only use this while using an HDMI cable at the same time because this adapter doesn't have video ports. The only port available to use for video while using this adapter is the HDMI port. However, there should be no reason you can't use just an HDMI cable to your receiver. Should work just like your cable box. Does the sound work but just not surround sound? If that's the case, did you make sure your 360's audio settings were correct? That it's set to Dolby Digital 5.1? Probably shouldn't have to do that though as I think it's the default settin when using an HDMI cable.

Is this a "good" version? Many of these adapters are not soldered correctly and when you switch input sources, your Xbox will reboot/reset. Does your adapter work when switching? If so, this is a really good deal!! Even if it's not a "good" one, the price is decent. (BTW, it's an easy fix to get these not to reset.) Fix Tut here [avsforum.com]

There's no switch on this adapter, it's only for audio. You either use a toslink optical cable or RCA cables and set the correct setting in your Xbox 360 audio control panel. In regards to it's intended purpose, I've been using it almost everyday since November 10, 2009.

Ok thanks man I'm following you now. I honestly didn't realize or forgot about the hdmi port above the ethernet port (I use that to run the original Xbox router). That's what you'd use for the actual 360 router. I've been using the component cables with extra hdmi cables laying around all of this time. You're right, I'd just run the hdmi to the receiver, and hdmi and optical from the receiver to the TV. Pumped. Thanks again!
