last time when i got the weber grill for a penny, the sales person told me that they are not supposed to sell things that rings up as a penny
the girl who told me that could care less and sold me the grill for a penny anyway. |

This is VERY YMMV. anything that rings a penny is supposed to be pulled from the shelf. That means trash it or send back to mfr. They just missed them. Nobody run out and try to find them cuz they should be gone.

Son of a bitch. I was just at HD looking for one of these. Found one online but when I got to the store, the unit was actually different than what they had posted online. Store manager just apologized for the web being wrong but didn't actually do anything to appease me. Should've checked the clearance area but those are always YMMV anyway.

I have got in on quite a few penny deals from home depot that were posted. It is VERY YMMV, but sometime it comes through.

Guys, this is clearly theft if you are doing it at the self checkout like the OP did if it is ringing up for $0.01 and it has a price tag on it for that high. It might be different if a human is selling you the item for that price, but otherwise this is clear theft and could be charged as such as you know it is not supposed to ring up for near free. I would not be surprised to see Home Depot press charges, either. Almost definitely not for 1, but if you go walking out of there with 15 thermostats the cops being called is at least a highly possible scenario if someone notices. Not to mention your credit card will be on file if you use one, and camera images of you if not.
