Hey all. It's 3 hours (ish) before the SO and I head out for a camcorder-buying misadventure. I'm looking for some solid recommendations on what to buy. I'm looking for a camera that records to either HDD or Flash memory with high optical zoom, good low-light visibility (our apartment is pretty dark). We'll be using this camcorder to record baby stuff (as in, our baby eating, playing, birthdays, park, etc). So 80% of the use will be in doors but we do want good mobility for the parks, zoo outings and so on. Price limit is $500. I've best buys, frys and radio shacks at my disposal (and obviously all the e-tailers). I'm not very concerned with still picture quality, as I have a Rebel XT DSLR (which does not shoot video). I also have a Lifecam Cinema webcam so I don't need it to double as a webcam either.
syco, I did consider that at some point but to be quite frank it seems to me that either I sacrifice quality video or quality stills. I'd rather have 2 separate instruments that do their respective jobs well. In the end I may end up lugging only the camcorder. Though if I did consider it, what would you recommend?
Any HD consumer cam is fine from Sony, Canon , Panasonic. Just add LED lights and extra battery for indoors because most consumer camcorder have bad low lux shooting. You also can try to control the light if possible.
THIS camcorder is highly rated for low lux, Panasonic HDC-HS60 and the Canon Vixia HF M31 have good overall shooting.
AT FRYS is the the CHEAP Samsung Flash Memory High Zoom Digital Camcorder F50 $119
52x wide angle zoom. 2.7" LCD.
