Can you recommend a site for educating me on the basics of computer hardware, for the purpose of buying a desktop?
I'm in the market for a new desktop. I purchased our last one about five years ago, purely on the advice of a cousin. It's served me well, but the cousin is no longer around. I'd like to have a basic understanding of the different terms I'm seeing while shopping for a PC. (For example, what does the amount of cache mean to me, etc.)I've searched around quite a bit, but I'm only finding the information I'm looking for in bits and pieces. Often, it's mixed in with articles explaining things to someone who's never USED a computer. Or, the information is so far over my head that it means very little. I'm definitely comfortable using a working machine. My troubleshooting skills and understanding of the stuff "under the surface" are what's sadly lacking. In summary, I'm looking for a reference site that is current, in depth enough to be of use in comparing computers and recognizing what's of value to me, yet simple enough for a non-techie to comprehend. Also, I'm looking to figure out what makes a computer appropriate for the specific tasks I'll be using it for. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!! |

http://www.hardware-revolution.com/ might be a good one to look at. It's geared more towards a machine builder, but as long as you're willing to go into detail on each component, you should be more than knowledgable by the time you're done.

ehow.
But a lot of the terms thrown out there are marketing. There are few computers out there for you to buy that won't be good for you. I assume you want a computer for basic needs since most people who want a specific purpose box usually know stuff about them (simply because they find them fascinating). I
