To put it simply Backlit is better than Edge lit . For edge lit LED bulbs are aligned along the sides of the LCD panel and projected inward to light the picture. With backlit LED LCD, LED bulbs are positioned across the back of the LCD. You will notice the difference more when the screen is black. Blacks will be brighter on the sides while darker in the middle. Backlit LED LCDs will have an even shade of black across the screen because the bulbs are spread across the screen.

Back-lit is superior, but more expensive and makes the set thicker.

Edge-lit screens can be prone to "flashlighting", where you can see the backlight leaking from the corners as if someone were shining a flashlight. Sony edge-lit LED screens are particularly notorious for this, but this is a 2011 model, so hopefully they've gotten better.
