Thread Details

Does anyone have trouble getting their PS3 slim to recognize/play Metal Gear Solid 4? The last time I played this game was in December of '09 on the same system (120GB slim), and it ran fine. I popped it in tonight and my PS3 made a few clicks and eventually gave up. The disc doesn't even show up under the 'Game' column. All other games run fine.

I googled my problem and found a lot of other people with the same issue but with no solution. Most of the people can load the game, but they just get a black screen. Trying different copies of the game yield the same results. Some have said that they are also having trouble loading GTA IV.

Any input appreciated! Thanks!

Try ejecting your disk, then pressing and hold the EJECT button when there's no disc inside it. After 5 sec you should hear some humming. Then try another game or movie and see what happens.

No luck. Frown It's only MGS4 that the system won't recognize.

That's odd. Do you have any game data for MGS4 on the system? Try deleting that and see if it makes a different. It does sound like more of a hardware type of issue though

Yeah, it is strange! Especially since the game worked in '09 when I first bought the slim.

I tried deleting the game data and restoring system default settings last night, but no go. I googled "ps3 slim, clicking while reading," and found a thread with someone with the same exact problem as me. Notice I didn't even add "mgs4" to the search query.

I'm having a problem where the PS3 makes a clicking noise at the startup. After a while, the PS3 makes a noise as if the disc is being ejected. Right after the eject noise I hear the noise when the CD goes in. So its like eject-insert noise. Please help.

My PS3 is able to read disc but it takes 10 or more tries till it reads the disc. All my games work except for one. Metal Gear Solid 4. All the disc are clean with no scratches. Please help.
The clicking only happens when I insert MGS4. Some people have suggested that it's because the game is recorded on a dual-layer Blu-ray disc, which may be why GTA IV isn't working either for them either.

I called PS3 customer support about this and they wanted me to format my HDD. And if that didn't fix the problem, I will need to have it serviced for $100+tax... to play a $10 game.

I had a problem with my Skate 3 that wouldn't show up in the Game column of XMB. Turned out there was a crack in the disc that could only be seen if you looked at it from the bottom. If I inserted and ejected a number of times, it would eventually work. But as time pressed on, it would work less and less. Ultimately had to get a new copy, which works just fine.

Inspect the disc, see if that might be an issue.

Thanks for the heads-up, but I actually went to Gamestop yesterday to buy a used copy of this game and it still doesn't work on my system. While it's possible that I'm just super unlucky, I think there's just a hardware issue with my PS3 that's preventing it from properly reading dual-layer blu-rays. Unfortunately, the only Blu-ray movies I own is the Planet Earth series (no idea whether or not they are dual-layer discs), and they run fine.*

*When I was on the phone with a Sony CSR, I popped in disc 2 of Planet Earth and it gave me a green screen, but the audio was working fine. I tried again a few hours later and everything worked fine. ?__?

Does the PS3 have Games on Demand? You could probably buy all the DL BD's in that format for less than $100, haha

Thanks, baby boy. Worked on my fatty, too. I just never got around to playing it. I'm selling the game tonight since I can't play it. =( Hopefully the new MGS will run on my slimmy!

Anyone ever had (or heard about) FFXIII farking up the PS3's blu-ray drive laser?

When I bought MGS4 used I had the same problem. I searched online and found people have problems with this game, and many had luck when they just exchanged the disc. I did, and the game worked fine in both my fat and slim ps3.

The disc that didn't work was a non GH version, the disc that worked was a GH version.
