Home audio help

I don't really know much about home audio systems. I currently own one but it starting to have a lot of issues. I would like to buy a new one but don't know what I should be looking for when buying one.

Things I would like it to have / be able to do:
Play mp3 cds
Ability to connect to a laptop and/or mp3 player
Loud enough for a home party
Hold at least 2 cds

Is there anything else I should be able considering when looking for one?
