For those of you who missed out on the recent Canon 60D deals, it looks like there is a decent one going on at Amazon.

Order Summary
Items (4): (1) $1,890.37 (2) $1990.37 (3) 1590.37
Shipping & Handling: $0.00
Promotion Applied: -$12.39
Promotion Applied: -$150.00
Promotion Applied: -$200.00
Total: (1) $1,527.98 (2) $1,627.98 (3) 1227.98

NOTE: These prices may not be the exact total as the prices of the lenses vary day to day. The total (for the 60D w/ 18-135mm kit) has stayed around $1520-1580, with the largest fluctuation of pricing occuring on the 70-300mm lens. The front runners jumped in when it was $1557. The small increases in lens price has never "killed" the deal and even at the highest price it has been, most consider it a great deal.

Want it even cheaper?
You can also add Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II Inkjet Photo Printer [amazon.com] for $349 - $400 MIR [images-amazon.com]. You can probably fetch $150 if you decide to flip the printer.

Conservative Resale Value of Lenses
18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ($250)
70-300mm f/4-5.6 ($400)
55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 ($150)
18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 ($500)

There has been some discussion on the reliability of acbpromotions, the company that processes the Canon printer rebates. People have have had no problems receiving their rebates, however they can give you troubles if you don't follow the directions. Also they have been reported to be slow at times. That said, follow all directions, take extra precautions, and you should not run into many issues. I've included some tips below

REBATE TIPS & PRECAUTIONS:
1. Make extra copies of everything.
2. When you cut out the UPC make sure you cut out and send in the entire cardboard cut out of the box. DO NOT JUST PEEL THE TOP LAYER. Extra postage may be necessary since the box is thick.
3. The rebate form explicitly states it must be HANDWRITTEN.
4. Send the rebate through certified mail.

Check the wiki for latest updates. Hope this helps someone out!

I did a lot of research(over than what I should do) on lens/lenses for my Canon 60D. I got into 24-105L refurb deal. Finally decided what's best for me in terms of my abilities. It is your abilities and understanding of camera, light etc etc. rather than lens which will make good pictures. Lens will only help to an extent. Every lens is there for a reason and I am sure Canon spends a hell lot of money researching what focal lenghts people prefer in general. Here is my personal take on some of the general purpose and high end Canon/Sigma/Tamron lenses.

Canon 15-85mm - Great reviews and build. 4 stop IS since it is 2009 version, but lack of constant aperture is a big problem indoors. Great walkaround lens on Crop. I don't know if tag of $750 justifies though.

Canon 24-105L - Simply one of the best lenses around. 3 stop IS. But 24mm for many would be too narrow on a crop sensor. This lens is built like a tank and is weather and moisture sealed. Tag of $1200 which comes with a red ring around lens (important for many if you ask me)... ouch.

Canon 50mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.4 - Everybody should have 50mm f/1.8 until they are ready for updgrade to 50mm f/1.4. Costs about $110. Sigma 50mm and 30mm both with f/1.4 are widely regarded to be superior to Canon in terms of IQ and build. I didn't want to pay for Sigma so settled with my refurbished 50mm f/1.4. I decided to sell Canon 50mm f/1.8 and keep Canon 50mm f/1.4 for portraits. Build quality and fast AF speed is big advantage.

Tamron 17-50 Non VC vs Canon 17-55 IS vs Sigma 17-50 OS - Out of this clear winner in price is Sigma OS for around $550, winner in IQ is Canon (but it is a dust magnet) which costs $1100. Both in terms of price and quality, Tamron 17-50 Non VC takes the honors with a tag of $450. There is a $25 rebate and if you know a student, rebate is $85 addtional which can be combined for $110 which takes price down to $340. Tamron also comes with a hood and 6 year warranty. Canon - Are you learning something here ? Canon comes with crappy 1 year warranty (though their CS is excellent). Sigma EX lenses come with 4 year warranty. So Tamron is clear winner in terms of warranty.

Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM - I would say this is poor man's L. Amazing IQ and good build, but 85mm is overkill on crop sensor in my opinion. If you have FF, go for this one without a doubt over 50mm. For $399 this lens is a no brainer for some with crop sensor as well. Maybe my next purchase if I can find a good used one for $250.

Canon 55-250mm IS Zoom/Telephoto - You just cannot go wrong with this lens for the price of $150. New version is coming or might have already arrived, but don't expect miracles. Canon will make build quality even cheaper if they want to.

Canon 18-135/18-200 Kit Lens - Both sold as kit lens with 60D and comes with variable aperture. Resell price is around $300 and $450. Not bad for outdoors, but AF speed is too slow indoors. IQ is at par with 18-55, but extra zoom might help many. I tried 18-135mm and frankly it is not bad, but if shooting something moving in less light, go for something else.

So for the price of 24-105L, I could or should be able manage with Canon 50mm f/1.4 for portraits, Tamron 17-50 for general walk around/indoors with flash and 55-250mm for Telephoto/Zoom when I need it. I also got 430EX II which is a great flash for indoors. You can get crazy fast shutter speeds indoors on most lenses with constant aperture with flash bounced.

There are also many other options like 17-40L, 24-70L, 28-70 (the brick without IS) and 70-200mm f/4 and f/2.8 with IS. My next purchase just like JD is 70-200mm f4L with IS when I am ready for it and obviously have the money and use for it. Hope this helps people. I might have missed many other lenses, but for a enthusiastic newbie or amateur, above should suffice.

Hah yea I was using conservative estimates based on what someone might receive if they were to sell their items on eBay after shipping and seller fees. The value of the 70-300mm is definitely closer to $450, probably $280 for the 18-135mm lens and around $180 for the 55-250mm lens.

Hah if it was brand new you definitely priced it a little low. Right now, the cheapest one on Amazon is $480 for a new one. The last 5-10 completed listings on eBay are all $450+.

For $100 more, I think I like the kit with the 18-200 lens vs 18-135 ... thoughts?

Another question, Body only is $899 and the kit with 18-200 is $1299 so $400 more. Do you think this is a good combo (Amazon sells the lens for $600) since I'll be needing a lens or are there better options you can suggest to spend that $400.

Also nice to see the printer dropped a few bucks from $450 to now $433.

That's a excellent deal as well. The lens in that kit is worth $500+

If you're going to sell that 18-200mm it might be worth it, but if you're planning on keeping it, the lens got pretty bad reviews: check photozone.de

Thanks cksnipe for the reply and providing the review. I already purchased this same deal from Amazon yesterday when the Body only was back in stock but now contemplating the 18-200 kit. I was planning on keeping the kit lens for starters. The kit purchase price is about $200 off retail for the lens and the resell is not bad either (roughly $500?).

The printer also dropped $15 from yesterday so now I'm more tempted to cancel my Body only order and re-order the 18-200 kit.
