Canon 60D digital SLR serial number

GunMan 3,382 510 July 13, 2011 at 11:59 AM
Does anyone happen to know how to decode Canon 60D serial numbers? If one serial number starts 0670 and another one starts 1270, is the one that starts 1270 newer?

Neither helps the OP, especially considering the latter is for lens date codes, which only appear on L series lenses.

As to the 60D's serial number, I doubt anyone knows the full scheme, considering such knowledge could lead to some pretty flagrant fraud. If they are incremental, chances are the numbers are distributed throughout the world randomly.

That being said, I know that with my 5D, the first number of serial number corresponded to the year manufactured. Starting with 1, meant that it was manufactured in 2006. It would appear that this scheme may still be resuming with the 60D. My 60D's serial number (9 digits) starts with 5, meaning it would have been manufactured in 2011, which is probably accurate.
