Its a really nice remote I have two of them I picked up at goodwill of all places about 2 years ago. Both are still working fine...the web based only configuration kinda sucks but its nice having one remote instead of six.

The 550 is my Fav. remote ... the 520 looks prety dang good at this price. I like it more than my 880 (and my prev. 659 and 680 and friend's 720)

Question: I've only superficially investigated this, but seems like this 520 is very much the older model. There is a 650 on AMZ for $60. I've looked at some of the reviews and comparisons, but does anyone have experience with any of the other ones? Why get the 6 year old + 520 when newer models aren't too much more? Thx

Just reading the info on the links above - the 650 only controls 5 devices, but the 520 controls up to 12. Personally, I have more than 5 devices and so I'd go with the older model.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. I have a Harmony 550.

The 520 feels a lot cheaper than the 550, it seems to be more flimsy. I love my 550, I have 2 of them in fact, so I bought the 520 for my parents thinking it would be of similar quality. Horrible remote IMHO.

I also own both. I use both on a daily basis (520 when the kids are awake, on the upstairs tv; 550 when they're in bed, on the downstairs one).

I don't know what you're talking about--I don't see any difference in build quality (maybe I have a different lot?).

with xbmc:
I actually prefer the 520 as it has the 'prev' button just to the upper right of the directional pad (vs the 550, which has it on the bottom). I use 'prev' frequently with xbmc, so placement is important to me. It was also much easier to program for xbmc (granted, this can be a crap-shoot, as anyone who has tried can probably attest).

any cheap way to make this not need line of sight? All of our equipment is in a cabinet.
