You can turn an old iPhone into a free VOIP phone using Viber and a google voice number. I installed viber [viber.com] on our old iPhone 3G that no longer has phone service but can still connect over WIFI. Register Viber using your google voice number and get the activation code from your google voice account. Once registered on the device, you can send or receive calls or text anyone using Viber, which is the only downside, but hey, its free.

We don't really use the phone, but it is nice to have it as a backup since we don't have a land line. It also comes in handy to call a misplaced phone, which seems to happen pretty regularly around my house.

I don't have any other devices but I would assume it would work with an iPod touch or android device as long as they have a mic and speaker. I saw some people have installed Viber on an iPad in this post.

Why don't you just install Skype on your wifi devices so that you can call or text anyone using Skype?

I use Google Voice and Talkatone. Unlimited calling/texting to any number in the US, and it's totally free.

i use Google Voice. if you want to talk to family or friends abroad. create a gmail account with a new google voice number. Ask your family abroad to login in on gtalk with this new ac or to gmail and call dial from there or you can call them or they can call you and talk unlimited.
Downside: they need to use a pc with mic/speaker or a laptop but hey, its free calls incoming/outgoing.

Grooveip works for voip calls or you can you googlevoice + sipdroid, but then you also have to make a sipgate account, if you don't wanna pay for Grooveip though its worth the convenience.
