Looking for a gaming laptop for diablo 3!

I purchased a new laptop fall last year and paid nearly around 1,400 for a Dell Studio series 14" laptop. I am a sophomore in college and a gamer at heart.

At the end of the day, I wouldn't recommend a laptop for gaming. I know it's not what you want to hear and I'm sure you'll probably buy one anyways, but just hear what I have to say because I think they are legitimate concerns.

From my experience, laptops run extremely hot. I have a core i7 first generation cpu and a nice AMD graphics card (mobile of course). At peak performance, it seriously burns my skin, and my laptop is elevated on a desk. Anytime you have enormous amounts of heat, you start to degrade the performance and longevity of your components. Best case scenario, you pick up a really nice aftermarket cooling pad. You'd want something from Cool Master most likely.

Do you know what size you want? 13.3" or 14.0" or 15.6" or 16" or 17.3"?

I work in electronic sales and on average, folks buy a laptop because they want mobility. If you're getting a 17.3" system because of the screen size for gaming, you might as well just get a desktop because that thing is going to feel enormous on your lap. If you plan on using it on a desk and taking it places, fine! But consider that it's still going to be 6.5lbs fully loaded.

Thus, most folks go with 15.6" because you have the best of both worlds: mobility and screen size. Keep in mind that smaller components are more expensive. They exponentially increase with 14"s and 13.3"s. 15.6" is almost the sweet spot.

Here's what it comes down to ultimately. Diablo 3 is going to be an incredible game with fancy graphics and cool features. I truly believe that this is a game that should be experienced on a 23" screen with awesome graphics, and some piece of mind to go with it. You'd also be able to rest at night knowing that your components aren't going to take a long walk off a short bridge.

But like I said, if you're hell bent on getting a laptop, by all means go for it.

I took a little time to post this because if I could leap back 1 years time, I would tell my self to get an inexpensive 14" laptop from Costco, and then just build my own computer. This is what I am doing right now, and man is it rewarding seeing the parts come in.

Umm, I use a 17" laptop for gaming because I work in 2 different cities and it's a lot easier to put a 17" laptop in a case and go than to break down and travel with a desktop. It's also easy to take a 17" laptop to a friend's house to LAN or multi in the same room, which I also do. You CAN take a desktop, but then you have 3+ pieces to lug around (monitor, case, accessories), and setup time is longer. Desktops are kind of heavy and monitors are awkward to carry.

tl;dr: you are writing off the 17" laptop too easily.

I bought it literally 40 mins after it came online @ Best Buy. Had them ship to the store and voila!

Agreed, that is a sweet laptop. Not a fan of nVidia cards, but that's the only flaw I see (and it's a personal pref).

I'm a fan of ATi (AMD?) cards, but know what? If a nVidia card can prove itself and not run like molten lava then I'll take a shot. Glad I did, too.

I've been PC gaming exclusively on a 17" laptop for over four years now, and haven't regretted it at all.
It's been on my lap the whole time, too. Of course, I've already sired all the children I intend to

Yeah, I wouldn't hesitate to buy that one if I were in the market right now. It's seeming almost certain my next one will be whatever the current model of those is.

Why the need to spend $2k? There's decent gaming laptops around $1200.

get the console version (ps3 to be precise).
