Motorola SURFboard SB6121 Cable Modem $99.99 @ Amazon.com

Wow...."not a good price vote"??? Name me ONE place you can get the SB6121 CHEAPER....ANYWHERE....

And don't confuse this with the SB6120 which is the older model

It's also now been placed on Comcast's approved list.......so I plan on ordering one. I pay $7 a month for a rental on a cheaper quality of modem.......no longer

This is a killer price for this model. I've never seen it anywhere even close to $100 before. I'm itchin' to bite.

I only stumbled on this price by accident. Spent some time today finally hooking up my Ooma service (from a Woot deal I found in SD a month back) and thought...well....I can save money if I buy my own modem. Had known about the older model SB6120....was researching that one...which led me to this one....and a google search found this price. So I bit. Not in a rush, as I need to wait 3-4 weeks to get my number ported......then will work on replacing the modem as well to save more $$$

Might be a stupid question but isn't a modem a modem? I have the SB5101 Motorola worth getting this?

Whats the diff between this and the 6120. Guess I can get off my ashe and read about it.

So with the 6120, I'm getting at least 60/5 with charters 60/5 service, I don't think I would get any better with this new one.

Any thoughts?

Hmmm...and I have heard the opposite from people...that the 6121 runs much cooler

The 6120 is also a discontinued model........if that makes a difference

im using this modem right now actually. got it from best buy for 99.99, so im not sure this is really a great price. this model is just an updated version of the 6120, no different firmware from what i know, etc. so yes its a good modem.

It's the exact same thing as the 6120. Both the 6120 and 6121 are DOCSIS 3.0.

If you have an SB5101 or any other DOCSIS 2.0 modem, you may or may not need to upgrade. DOCSIS 3.0 is only required if you get about a 30 Mbps plan or higher. In fact, most ISP's (Comcast) require you to have a DOCSIS 3.0 modem if you have anything above their 20 Mbps plan.

If you don't know what your speed is, go to speedtest.net and check your speed (wired only, some wireless cards are painfully slow). If you get anywhere near 20 Mbps or above, look into your internet plan and ask your ISP if a DOCSIS 3.0 modem is for you.

The SB6120 and SB6121 are identical on the inside. Both use the same motherboard and SB612X firmware.

The SB6121 is in a slightly smaller housing that has been prone to more overheating.

There are some additional filters on the later model and minor firmware changes

Whatever minor firmware changes were implemented for the 6121 were also built into the 6120 as ISPs use the same now.

I have setup both the 6120 and 6121, at least on the Cox network both are downloading the SB612X-1.0.5.1-SCM00-NOSH firmwares.
