I just recently moved and I'm going from DSL to Cable and looking for a cable modem. I'd rather buy one than rent one as everyone wants to charge $7 a month for that "service". I want to go with Charter and I'm told that they are almost fully doing DOCSIS 3.0 now; however, I have no modem. If someone knows that it's not worth it to go with a DOCSIS 3.0, I have no problem with any other cable modem. I was just told that it's the future...
If it helps, I have a Belkin Wireless G MIMO Router. I don't really know much about this and I'm not sure if that's even a good router.
But ya, any help in regards to a new Cable Modem that would be compatible with my Router would be awesome. I could spend around $75. The slicker the deal, the better.
I don't mind B&M deals or online, could go either way. Thanks for any help fellow Slickdealers!
Expect to pay around 80-100 I would guess for a Docsis 3.0 modem. More importantly though, if you're using wireless G for your main computer, don't waste time upgrading to Docsis 3.0. The bottleneck for you now is your wireless G router.. you want to upgrade to wireless N (or just go with a wired ethernet connection) before you upgrade to a docsis 3.0 modem. Your router and your modem should work together either way though, I don't think compatibility is an issue there.
Also, you might need to make sure the modem you get is compatible with your ISP (internet service provider). You can probably just call your ISP and ask them if the one you want is compatible, they should be able to tell you.
Awesome. Thanks for the info. I figured that the Wireless G router wouldn't help with DOCSIS 3.0. I assumed it would be backwards compatible, but wasn't sure. Do you know of a good place I can get the modem? Preferably a sale if possible, every dollar counts!
They're compatible, but it's like being on a highway stuck in traffic. You could be going at high speeds that DOCSIS 3.0 is capable of, but wireless G can only give you so much bandwidth, so you're stuck at G speeds. Get an N router, and ask your ISP if whatever speed you have now (or might plan to upgrade to at some point within a few years) will benefit from DOCSIS 3.0
Thanks for the rep, let me know if you need some more info. I recently spent like 2 weeks dealing with comcast and getting a new modem, so I did my homework
I got ya. I think even though I'm running the Wireless G right now, I'd like to go ahead and upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem that way when it comes time to upgrade router's too, I can go Wireless N and already have a good cable modem.
Is there a particular brand or model you'd recommend going with?
I'm going with Charter 18mbps downstream and they said they are fully compatible with any DOCSIS 3.0 modem (their words) Is that just CSR bs or can I really go with anything?
I figure if I can find a decent one at a B&M, I'll just look for one of those $10 off $50 type coupons and get a decent deal.
I am using charter. Renting a modem till I find a deal (got it free for a month, knew the gal behind the counter) . They gave me an Ubee u10c035-20. I have a linksys router and have had no problems. I have yet to reset either box. Been using it 3 weeks now. I am looking for an Ubee or Motorola.
