buying a couple of new computers come Thanksgiving, but I wonder if this is even worth the hassle of the rebate when free antivirus software is so good nowadays?

And for free? No brainer. Their rebates come quickly too, no worries there. It must be time to clear inventory for the next year's version.... not a big deal, you get the same protection they just make changs to the gui etc each year. |

Can anyone compare this with MS Security essentials? I like not ever having nagware for upgrades, and so far that free program seems to be serving me well. TIA

I haven't had extensive experience with this sort of thing since I started using AVG a while ago but my roommate uses it. When the subscription ran out his internet stopped working completely because they use a proxy and he wasn't a subscriber anymore, and they don't bother to change the proxy settings back.
He's not a techie so he had no idea what was happening. The software might be great but it's pretty ridiculous they'd do something like that. |

Norton supposedly ranks 5.0 or 5.5 out of 6.0. According to Dec. 2010 testing performed by AV-Comparatives, MSSE is about as good as other top-ranking, including Symantec, products. Though, if you have safe and sensible browsing habits, and regularly keep your PC up to date, you should be fine with MSSE. |
