Getting a Wii today. Any games I should check out?

Monster Hunter Tri is decent if you enjoy grinding games (a classic controller is a must).
Lost in Shadow is a hidden gem. One of the only Wii games I have enjoyed.
Castle of Shikigami and the Ultimate Shooting Collection are good shooters.
Mario Kart is a must.
There are several petitions out there for Nintendo to port over some of the only decent RPG's from Japan. As of now, there are close to 0 RPG's for Americans.
Since it will also play gamecube games, the Metroid gamecube games are decent. Pick up Ikaruga if you really like shooters.

Dead Space Extraction is one of the more decent rail shooters, I just can't get over the non 1:1 aiming that the Wiimote has. If you like RE4, you will be happy though.

Do not for any reason attempt to play the Metroid other M game. If you ever only listen to one piece of advice that anyone on Earth has for you, listen to this one.

Get Super Smash Bros, a must have game. Also, Metroid is another must have. Really, any big name Nintendo game is a must have. They are the greatest game developers in the world.

It depends what genres you like. Many greats are already mentioned and you're getting the great marios. There are a good amount of gems: Zack and Wiki (point and click), Sin & Punishment, RE: Umbrella Chronicles & Darkside Chronicles (rail shooters), Conduit 1&2 (FPS), No More Heroes 1&2, MadWorld (gory 3rd person action), Okami (like Zelda), BoomBlox Bash party (dunno how you describe it -- throw stuff at blocks and watch them fall down. Sounds stupid, is awesome), PunchOut. Tatsunoko vs Capcom (Fighting). WiiWare has some greats as well: LostWind, World of Good, StrongBad, ....

Also, I kinda like Other M. It's a very polarizing game, though . If you can find Metroid Prime Trilogy, it's great. Way better than playing the Prime games with a GCN controller.

Tiger Woods 2010-2012 are awesome with Wii Motion+ if you like golf. Williams Pinball collection if you like pinball.

Finally, mod that puppy. Buy yourself an SD card, go to http://gwht.wikidot.com/ and make your Wii dance.

Seriously, homebrew is insanely easy to install and its only a software mod so it is removable. There are emulators for it and if you dont already have an emulator box, this is a decent substitute.

While I had my Wii the 3 games I liked the most were Scarface (you won't find it in stores), Bully, and Mario Kart.
