yeah, wider aperture on the sigma and better magnification. I wonder how the photos compare at the same aperture level, that would be nice to know before springing into this lens. It is on my list of lenses that I keep an eye on.
that aside. The Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS (not the one listed here) actually outperforms the Canon 70-200 2.8IS I had (which was a great lens) and is honestly VERY close or equal to my 70-200 MkII. Wide open its a bit softer around the corners when pixel peeping, but at f4 and up it really was undetectable which lens was used. I was blown away with the quality from Sigma. Unfortunately my shooting needs require me to have weather-sealing and the robust build quality of the Canon L. Both the Canon and Sigma were dead sharp though. I have really become a fan of Sigma's products (at least the ones I've used and put through some tests)
yeah, sigma lenses can be a great value as far as IQ is concerned. if you can take the extra steps to be very careful with the lens you can get comparable results to the L lens. the only caveat i would add to that is that sigma's quality control is spottier than canons: the odds of you getting a lens with soft areas or focus issues are higher with sigma's gear... canon's lenses are much more uniform in quality. but if you score a good copy of a sigma lens you will be good to go.
and it's like he says: canon's build quality is head-and-shoulders better in terms of weather sealing and ruggedness... the L lenses are designed to have the sh*t kicked out of them and keep on ticking. i dunno if it's worth $1000 more for the canon lens, I guess it's up to the buyer.
