Does anyone know the difference between this and the BW-12B1LT/BLK/G/AS?? I think the BW-12B1LT is the more expensive version but also discontinued... does anyone know if the 2D to 3D works well on the B1LT??
Damn, I just ordered it but I can cancelled. What's RIP Lock? I guess I should school myself and find out.... I plan on making personal copies of blueray disc that I buy . I assume RIP lock does not allow this.
Ah rip lock:
Riplock is a characteristic of newer[when?] computer DVD-ROM drives that slows the drive transfer rate when reading DVD-Video data, typically to 2x-4x on drives that otherwise (as of mid-2005) could read at 8x or 16x. This restriction reduces the amount of noise when the drive is playing a DVD by providing the lowest rotational speed that allows for adequate data transfer from the DVD to the computer. This slow speed and low data rate makes it less convenient to rip large DVD video collections to a computer. On some riplock-equipped drives, riplock can be removed by firmware reflashing (referred to as "increase read speed," "read speed patch," or "riplock patch"). It can also be disabled on some drives[which?] by pressing the eject button for three seconds without any disc inserted.
LiteON calls the riplock feature SMART-X(C).
It is OEM, it doesn't come with software and codec to play BR. The Asus Hammer is something else, if you can make it work anyway.
Asus BR drives are RIP-locked, same as Samsung and LG I think. Pioneer and Plextor are not. Hence the often sales on certain brands at Newegg.
This Asus is good if you only want to burn your own BR data disks, or you already have the $129 Cyberlink player . I rather buy standalone BR player instead of a locked PC drive.
I rep-ed the OP for the price, but in my opinion it has limited usability.
